Deborah Lippmann Holiday 2010 Shades - Boom Boom Pow and Today Was A Fairy Tale

I know that I'm a little late posting these as it's now a few weeks into the new year, but there's nothing that requires one to love these only during Winter...

Deborah Lippmann has once again created some magnificent glitter shades. I'm loving this. A high end brand who appreciates the glitter.

Boom Boom Pow. This one is said to contain real 24 karat gold. It has large gold hex glitter and some tiny delicate gold sparkles in a clear base. I'm betting that the 24k gold is those little glimmers of gold in the base. While this polish would be great for layering, I personally prefer it when worn alone, like this. Very magical looking.

Today Was A Fairy Tale. Like Boom Boom Pow, this one also contains a fancy ingredient: Virgin Diamond Powder. What is Virgin Diamond Powder? Well, it's an abrasive made of micronized diamonds and it's used for polishing. Is there a benefit to having it in nail polish? Who knows. All I know is it's cool to say, oh, my nail polish has diamonds in it. Anyway, this shade is a sheer grey base with large and small silvery blue glitter. The base tints the glitter a bit and it has a cloudy sky sort of effect. Very pretty. Excellent for layering:

Deborah Lippmann Today Was A Fairytale (one coat) over Zoya Dove. See how the grey base tints the polish a little? It deepens the color and adds a slight blue hue. So pretty.

Deborah Lippmann Today Was A Fairytale (one coat) over Illamasqua Obsess. Over such a bright color like Obsess, it really changes. It deepens and mutes the base polish and it makes the glitter stand out more- more contrast between light and dark.

The formula on these was good. They're sheer glitters so they need at least three coats- I'm wearing three coats in these pictures. They're a little thick so you should wait a few minutes between coats if you can, it will help make a smoother application. Drying time is average and removal isn't too bad for a glitter.

Because of the fancy ingredients like real gold and diamond, these are more expensive than the average Lippmann polish; they're $20 each.

Do you have these? What do you think of them?

(These were sent to me for review.)

  5. I have 'Today Was A Fairy Tale'; I love it! I will have to try layering it over some of my brighter cremes. I get a laugh out of the 'Virgin Diamond Powder'; did it come from a diamond that didn't get to play with the other diamonds? It's a nifty selling hook. ^_^ I'm lusting after 'Boom Boom Pow' but for now, I can't justify spending $20 on a single polish.

  11. Good timing, Scrangie! I just ordered Today was a Fairytale a few days ago. In fact, I need to go check my mailbox to see if it's in there. I found it on amazon for a little less than $20 ($18, maybe?) and I ordered a few products from the same seller so even with shipping, it was a deal. I got Bad Romance and Across the Universe as well and these will be my first Lippmann polishes. I'm sooo excited.

  18. I have 'Today Was A Fairy Tale', and I love it. I wore it on New Year's Eve over China Glaze For Audrey, and it was stunning. I've also worn it over a grey creme, truly beautiful... next I'll be trying it over a dark blue.
    Thanks for the wonderful swatches!

  21. lol, NOPE!

I like Today Was a Fairytale, but unless Beauty.com has a sale, I won't be getting it.
I hate when companies are like, oh there are diamonds in here, there are opals in here, there's crack in here, etc.
That stuff isn't doing anything that regular old glitter or shimmer won't do. They know they just put it in there to jack up the price. >__>

  22. Long time reader, first time commenter. I love this blog! I also love my Deborah Lippmann glitter polishes. However, these look awfully close to the Sephora by OPI polishes "Only Gold for Me" and "Flurry Up!" that I got for $9.00 each before Lippmann's came out. I have been thinking about getting these, but can not justify the purchase since they seem so close. The The Sephora silver glitter does not have the gray base, but I prefer it that way.

If you are a fan of the big hexagonal glitter (like me) I recommend you pick up the one Cover Girl polish that sneaked its way into my collection called "Disco Dazzle". It is a hologram glitter that wears well over my OPI collection and looks similar to one of their UK exclusives "Disco Ball Sparkle". It takes a couple of coats if you want to build up a lot of sparkle, but for $3.00 I am happy with it.

  23. I agree with ChaosButterfly, the extravagant ingredients are just gimmicky.

And, even though Today was a Fairy Tale is really really pretty, anything having to do with Taylor Swift irks me.

  25. I love these polishes. They are a staple for my polish box. Boom Boom Pow is great. I like to wear it with two layers, it looks so simple and sophisticated like that. I find today was a fairytale to be a bit thicker than BBP and looks great by itself. I used BBP on top of I Know What Boys Like by DL and people thought it looked like lapis lazuli. GORGEOUS. I also used it with Hit Me With Your Best Shot by DL and did and ombre tip of gold. Looked awesome. My favorite by far.
