Blue Cross Chunky Nail Pumpkins Halloween 2011

These Halloween pumpkin nail polishes are another one of my favorite seasonal items every year. They're manufactured by Blue Cross, who make the adorable Snowman nail polishes for Christmas, and they also make Claire's nail polish, which is why I sometimes see Claire's dupes in the pumpkin/snowman/ornaments polishes. For Halloween, they do a huuuuge variety of colors; all kinds of multi-glitters, glow in the dark with glitter, neons, some random shimmers, plain black, blacklight reactive, neon with glitter, mini polish sets, stringy glitters, shaped glitters, the whole nine yards. I only got a few this year since most are repeats from previous years, but this time I saw a couple new ones.

The one thing I don't like about these is that they never have names. The ones this year are called... get this.... Chunky Nail. That's pretty accurate, I must say. These are quite chunky.

Here's swatches of a few:

This one's a green-based multicolored glitter. Very rough. Main colors are green and gold.

This is a blue-based multicolored glitter. Reminds me a little bit of OPI Absolutely Alice, just not as shiny and twice as chunky. It has two kinds of blue, gold, purple and silver.

This one is my favorite. It's a smoky black jelly base with multiple sizes of shiny orange glitter. A little like China Glaze Fortune Teller. Still chunky, but much smoother than the pure glitters. They also have another version of this with a murky, weird looking green-orange jelly base which is also very cool.

This one looks amazing in the bottle. It's a vivid electric purple sheer base with a galaxy of different glitters inside. Opalescent mylar flakes, tiny pastel opal glitter, seems like a little bit of regular glitter is in there too, but it's hard to tell. It's incredibly sheer and ridiculously thick so I didn't even bother trying to show it on its own. I did one coat and said screw it, I'm layering this. Hahaha. I don't remember which base color I used, but it was a black-purple creme and I did one coat of the pumpkin polish with two coats of topcoat. The flakes are huge and are pretty impossible to get completely smooth.

The formula on these is not fantastic. They are thick, rough, take a long time to dry and eat through multiple coats of topcoat. Still cool, though.

One of the ones I bought is missing a brush! I thought it looked weird, and when I opened it to check it out, I noticed that the brush was just completely gone... No trace of it anywhere inside the bottle. Oops!

I usually get mine at Meijer, I'm not sure which other places carry these!

  4. Rite Aid carries these, too. This year I got a silver and black glitter in a clear base, and a small silver glitter with crescent moons in a clear base. :) I want that purple one! Haven't seen it, though.

  7. How does the purple flakie compare to the Hot Topic flakies? Do you think Blue Cross also makes the Hot Topic ones?

  8. So glad someone mentioned Rite Aid because I was getting really sad that I live in New England and might not be able to get these.

  9. Thank you so much, everyone :D

Linen and Silk, thank you! No Rite Aid here so I would have missed that!

Allison, Good question... I have no clue! I've never seen the Hot Topic one, is it still available? Might have to go check it out. I think there's a very, very high possibility that Blue Cross does Hot Topic's polish. I remember them being very similar to Claire's and all the pumpkin/snowman ones, but it's been a while since I've seen what they had to offer.

  12. so pretty. How much are these polishes?

I like the last one - this looks a bit like deborah lippmann's 'ACROSS THE UNIVERSE' http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/lippmanncollection_2176_220435

    or Revlon's new collections, http://www.revlon.com/Revlon-Home/Products/Nails/Nail-Color/Revlon-Nail-Enamel-Expressionists.aspx

Thank you so much for the review^^
I'm glad I found this blog and read this review,

  15. Just got back from Rite Aid and they did have these (at least I think they were, they were pumpkin bottles) but they only had a few colors and all but one color was sold out (not one you show above, it was black and orange)

  16. Wow, that's the first time that I've ever heard of a polish missing its brush! That's even worse than a wonky brush.

As much as I love the colours, I won't try to track these down just because the quality of the formula isn't there. (And I reallllly liked that last one, but not being able to get the glitter flat is a major deal breaker for me.)

Thank you for this great review and all the swatches, Scrangie! I will drool over them in your post instead of in person.

Haha, and what a name - Chunky Nail? Hahaahaha!

  17. These are awesome! :)
When are you going to show us The Muppets Collection from OPI? (IF you are that is... :P) I am so excited about it and can't find any decent swatches out there! :P

  18. Aw, a shame they're all rough and chunky (ew) because it's almost worth buying them JUST for the bottle. Which, why don't more US brands do fun novelty bottles? I'm planning on ordering a bunch of Periperas from Gmarket in SKorea *just because* the bottle is so rad. The handle! It's a cat! And it's gold! A GOLD CAT. Awesome.

  19. Cotton Candy, they're $2.50 :) Unfortunately, it only looks like those two polishes while it's still in the bottle. Boo. Chunky. lol

Nail Nerd, hahaha, totally, me too!

Cassykins, oh no, I hope you can find the cool ones :(

Mary, well, if you change your mind, I'm sure they'll be resurrecting these for years to come!

Nationalphotographic, hopefully soon! I don't have them yet and I have yet to see them for sale in person, but as soon as I have them, I'll post them :)

Collier, I always wanted to have one of those cat bottles. Hahaha, I am such a sucker for packaging!

    Thanks again everyone :D

  20. They're $1.99 at Rite Aid. I'm going to visit a few more tonight, when the kid is with his dad.... :)

  21. My Rite Aid only carried the blacklight and glow in the dark ones, not these fun shades! Jealous! I got a light pink sheer glow in the dark glitter...the glow isn't all that strong though but the glitter is cute so it's OK :)

  22. Oh man, I love me some pumpkins! They look like winners this year!!

  23. woah... I want to find all of these!!

  24. OMG! I want all of these so bad! But I think the colors are very regional this year with different areas of the country getting different colors. *sigh* The only glitters I found were: fine silver with medium black hex, orange hex with a sprinkle of orange bar, black and orange bar, and holo crescent moons mixed with hex glitters. All had clear bases and the one with the crescent moons was super sparse. I've been to dozens of Rite Aids and these are definitely the only ones in my area (northeast). They also had some neons and glow in the dark pumpkins, but nothing like the ones in your pics. I love the last one best of all! <3
