Zoya MatteVelvet Winter 2009

Holy cow, you guys! These are AWESOME!!

Pictures first cause I'm speechless!

Harlow. Purple-rose-mauve matte shimmer. Wow, this is pretty. This is the one I was least excited about from the promo pictures, but it's way better in real life! I love it. It's almost purple, so that makes me happy. Kind of more of a soft saturated mauve or very, very dark pink than purple, but still... hot.

Savita. Bright blue-toned purple matte shimmer. AHHH!!! It's so beautiful!! I can't believe my eyes!! So gorgeous.... so gorgeous. Anyway... this is more of a blue-leaning purple but it has kind of a golden pink-red shimmer in it, so you get a nice mixture of blue-ish purple base and reddish purple shimmer. Very complex. It's like a cross between Yasmeen and Zara.

Veruschuka / Veruschuca. Blue-toned emerald green shimmer matte. Green... matte... shimmer... I think Zoya's been conducting secret mind-reading experiments on me. This is the shade that's missing from all the fall collections! This matte is slightly less matte than the others- more of a satin. It's not the chalky no-shine matte I was expecting, rather it's a slightly smooth matte with a little bit of shine left on it.
EDIT: This actually is supposed to be as matte as the others- I got an off bottle. Ignore the finish for now :)

The formula on these is great. Smooth, no chunks, not too thick but thick enough to be very opaque. These do dry extremely fast so you'll have to work quickly. For more matte application tips, please refer to my previous post on Zoya MatteVelvet. Like I said, these dry extremely fast so you won't need any sort of topcoat or drops. You'll be ready to go in about 5 minutes. They recommend not using a basecoat with these- I've never experienced any mattes staining my nails so you'd probably be fine without one. For me, I don't like to be without a nail strengthener on so I do wear a basecoat (Qtica Natural Nail Growth Stimulator) with these and I've not experienced anything negative. Mattes, by their nature, do not wear as long as regular polish. They are quite brittle after they dry and can crack after a few days of wear. I've gotten as long as three days without a chip or crack, but sometimes they can chip after one day. This is normal for mattes.

Wait, what's that? You're asking me what these look like glossy? Of course, you'd think I'd leave you hanging?? I just wanted to get the formula covered before your brain turned to goo from looking at these... Behold:

Harlow with topcoat.

Savita with topcoat.

Veruschuka with topcoat.

They're awesome worn matte but they're out of this world with a topcoat added. The sparkle in them is out of control. It's not glitter- no chunks. They're not difficult to remove like a glitter would be. These are just a very dense and intense shimmer, I'd say it verges on foil.

Overall, I'm totally thrilled with this collection. I am starting to get bored with mattes, to tell you the truth, but as soon as I saw these... WOW. There are other mattes? What other mattes? These are THE mattes. The best shades, the best finish. I don't usually like to declare things 'the best' because I love everything, but really... For me, these blow the other mattes out of the water. They're my favorite colors- how could I not love them? Green and purple in a matte shimmer finish. GET OUT OF MY HEAD, CHARLES!!!

These are currently available for pre-order on Zoya's website, and they ship September 15th.

  1. I am SO EXCITED to have ordered these!! They look fantastic!

I also love that the names for these are slightly more fantastic than usual, or is that just my imagination?

  2. Hi Scrangie. These look gorgeous! Just wanted to post in response to staining: the only matte I have tried is Posh. She stained my nails like you wouldn't believe even with a base coat. But she stayed on so much longer with Orly Bonder I would highly recommend it. That's just me though.

  3. So. pretty.

But I love what Loredana looks like, too, and I can't make it six hours without chips. I'm not going waste more cash at polish that looks pretty only for swatch photos.

  4. Oh wow. I just have to get Harlow. Love it. Thank you for the post :)

  5. Scrangie, those are fabulous. Now you're making me order some Zoyas...

Styrch - I can't speak for Scrangie, but Bonder is notorious for letting polishes stain your nails... for some reason, it lets the pigment through.

  6. I have to say, I'm sort of disappointed that the green is not more matte but the color is lovely, I may just slap a coat of essie MAY on top.

  9. Wow. Just wow. I so wish these wore longer...but I suppose I could wear them matte for a couple days, then topcoat them for the rest of the week. Best of both worlds?

  10. These are beautiful! And I love how they release them in a set of three, so I can get them all and not feel bad about it!!

  11. I love the satin-y finish of Verushka (hello color!) vs. the matte finish. And Savita is droolworthy!!!!!!!

  12. Savita and Harlow are so gorgeous I can't even believe it. Even Verushka matte looks very shimmery.

  14. These are amazing, but with all the other mattes that have been released I have liked the look but they all look way better glossy! Love all 3 of these amazing colours.

  16. The colors are great! I can't wait to order them and the OPI suede collection. Can you post some pics of Sephora by OPI 212 both shiny and matte. I have been trying to get that color but Sehphora isn't going to release it again until October. Thanks in advance!

  19. I think I just licked the screen. These polishes give me the same sensation of being in the bead store with bins of frosted glass. The colors are so amazing. I want to eat them. I know this is ill advised. I will abstain, but not from purchasing!

  20. Ahhh! I want these. The only Zoya matte I have is Loredana and I love it. These are even more awesome.

  22. Those look gorgeous! I'm just getting into mattes and these are not disappointing me at all. I especially love Savita because I adore bluish purples but Veruschuka is also beautiful. Will so be ordering these. :D

  23. I thought these were going to be pretty, but I wasn't sold until I saw your swatches. I just pre-ordered all of them. :-D

I also ordered the nail polish that you helped design because it is gorgeous and exactly what I wanted without even knowing it.

  24. They are all stunning ! Both matte and glossy and the colors are great :-)

  25. Wow Veruschuka is even more beautiful a green than I was expecting from the promo ad! I'm in love! Savita looks gorgeous too, but I'm a bit disappointed with Harlow. It looked darker and a bit more wine-toned in the ad and I was hoping for that. :(

  26. Veruschuka / Veruschuca is really beautiful but I don't think it looks like a matte polish.

  27. WTF!!!!!!!!! Insanity, Scrange. Insane! I think these may be the best lookin' mattes ever!!

  28. Those look gorgeous! I may not be able to resist them!

  29. I love Zoya's matte's. But I hate that it chips so fast in a day or two. Can you suggest colors in any brand that can achieve the Zoya Matte finish just by using matte top coats? Will holos work or any polish with lots of glitter?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gah! I want Zoya to release some some sort of promo so that I can splurge on these! Otherwise, I won't be indulging. :(

  31. Gymnastgirly - yeah, I know. But I haven't had too much trouble with it. With or without it, Posh stained my nails. It was almost easier for me to just let it chip off.

But it's not going to stop me from buying some of these. They're too pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree they'd have been much better as regular nail polish.

  33. I pre-ordered last week.
All I can say is wow.
    Best I've seen all year.

  34. Good gravy, lady! I was showing my husband these swatches and gushing about them... it's always a good sign when I feel compelled to share the news you post! Thank you! :)

  35. man! these are gorgeous!!! im kind of sad though i was really looking forward to the green but its not matte enough for me...

    ReplyDelete
  36. oh my. These are the only mattes I have seen that I would even consider, probably because they aren't super matte, that green is heavenly. I was reading the post thinking how cool would these look with a glossy top coat - thank you so much for adding that bit!! gorgeous and I want them although not sure I can get Zoya in the UK - does anyone know?

  37. Hi Scrangie. First, I have to say that I love your blog! I can look at your swatch-photos for hours, they're so gorgeous. And I love these polishes! The colors are absolutely beautiful! But I live in Norway, and the Zoya-website do not ship to Europe. Do you know any other sites that have these polishes and ship to Norway?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Loving these. I ordered Savita and Loredana. I was still skeptical about the Matte bandwagon, but you convinced me!

  39. Hi Scrangie! I just "found" your blog last night, and I've managed to pour over it for hours now! Thank you for everything here. I orderd stuff based on your reviews and swatches. Keep it up, grrl...
