China Glaze Halloween Glitters plus New Matte Magic topcoat

China Glaze released not one but TWO new Halloween-themed glitters this year. How awesome is that? Halloween... glitter... black... orange... Of course, for me it was love at first sight. Have a look!

Fortune Teller. Black creme base with small round orange glitter and large hexagonal orange glitter. I *believe* this is a Sally Beauty exclusive, but don't quote me on that. Anyway, this is right up my alley. It is just utterly gorgeous and *perfect* for Halloween. The glitter really shows through the dense black base and it has a very smooth finish. It does benefit from a coat of topcoat, but I don't find that it needs more than one.

Spellbound. Large round silver glitter, small round orange glitter and large hexagonal orange glitter. This is designed to be used as a topcoat, but it's dense enough to be used on its own if you prefer. This is three coats- there are a few bald spots but I'm satisfied with the coverage at this stage. The silver glitter is the dominant feature in this polish. It's a unique silver glitter as well- very smooth and shiny, like little metal plates.

Spellbound looks nice enough by itself, but where it really shines is on top of black:

Ugh, this is just impossibly gorgeous. I can't stop looking at it. It's all I want to wear right now! This is one coat over black and one coat of topcoat. And please excuse the tipwear, this was taken after two days of wear.

But China Glaze didn't just give us these awesome unique glitters for Halloween, they gave us another way to wear them. Matte Magic Matte Topcoat.

Matte Magic over Fortune Teller. I can hardly believe how cool this looks. It reminds me right away of a volcanic eruption or large fire. To me it looks like hot embers floating upward through thick black smoke. Or it reminds me of rivers of magma coming up through the ground, streams of lava flowing down the hillside and cooling- turning to black on the surface with hints of molten earth showing through.

Matte Magic over Spellbound over black. This one is just fun and awesome. It looks like a party. Halloween confetti. Candy in colorful metallic wrappers. I am completely in love with this look, it's ridiculous. I think these glitters were great before, but they're even BETTER as mattes. Matte glitter is mesmerizing. Can't get enough.

Matte Magic is also really nice. It gives a very matte finish, comparable to Essie's Matte About You Matte Finisher. And I know this is a very shallow reason, but I kinda like Matte Magic better because of the bottle. This bottle is adorable. I love the font, it reminds me of Bewitched. China Glaze did a really great job.

I know that Spellbound is sold in a set which includes Liquid Leather, White Out and Ghoulish Glow Glow In The Dark topcoat, but I already had all of those so I just bought the Spellbound by itself. The set is *really* cute though, it has a green background and a little witch... so adorable. I might go back and get it for the packaging alone!

Oh man... I freakin' love glitter.

These are available now, but Fortune Teller may only be available at Sally Beauty Supply.

  1. Any idea when and where Matte Magic will be available? Checked H2T and VNS but didn't notice it. Thanks!

  2. Wow, I don't like glitters, but these are gorgeous. I agree, Spellbound does look great over black. Do you have any good tips on removing glitters?

Thanks for posting about the Matte Magic. I was wanting to get one of those without having to pay $10 online.

  5. They look pretty but just looking at all that heavy glitter makes me cringe when I think of removing it. I hate removing glitter polishes so much, even with felt it's such a pain.

  6. I thought it looked like lava too! Nice collection!

  7. Hi Scrangie, Where did you find the Matte Magic? Also, I checked with several Sally's in my area and I'm told Fortune Teller is not going to be at all the stores. Any news on this? Great swatches! Can't wait to get my hands on these! Thanks so much for your hard work!

  9. Fortune Teller looks so great with matte top coat.

I called my local Sally Beauty too and they said they don't sell Fortune Teller.

Sally Beauty's website is selling it online but it looks like it's out of stock.

  10. I'm lovin the fortune teller done in matte, that's sooo awesome. I can't notice much difference in spellbound as a matte though...maybe its just me??

  11. Leave it to ChG to make gorgeous glitter and an awesome matte top coat! Can't wait to compare it to Essie matte about you.

  12. Every picture show something gorgeous. I love absolutely everything in this collection which is rare when it happens to me. My humble opinion is that NO ONE makes glitters as well as China Glaze! And the Matte top coat is cool too! I wonder if I'll be able to get Fortune Teller from France. I hope so.

  13. These look great! I'm going to check Sally's tomorrow! :-)

  14. Awesome! I really love them matte too. Your description of Fortune Teller matte as being like a volcanic eruption was dead on. I immediately thought of the black lava with hot orange embers when I saw the picture.

  15. Love Fortune Teller, but sadly it's not at my local Sally B. yet. And yay, a cheaper, very matte topcoat! I didn't really like the satin finish, but the really matte topcoats were all more expensive...Love China Glaze!

  17. Thanks for these awesome swatches! Usually I'm kind of opposed to matching my makeup and clothing to the seasons/holidays, but the Matte Magic over Fortune Teller was just so cool looking! Next time I see a Sally Beauty, I need some of that Matte topcoat!

  18. Fortune Teller is amazing! I wish they'd made a purple with orange glitter (it looks more like flakes though?).

  19. i really like those but i hardly ever wear glitter polish because it is such a pain to remove. I use the white felt tip that MissChievous gave in one of her videos when I do wear it.

  20. I've been searching for the China Glaze Matte Magic all over ever since I read this. But, I couldn't find it anywhere until I stumbled upon the China Glaze Twitter page that said it won't be shipped out until 10/06/09 :( I WANT IT NOW!

  21. Feeling very frustrated with this limited edition & Sally only colors from China Glaze right now! I know none of my local stores have these yet because I've been searching them all for the chrome Muse with no luck =( If I could I would just order everything online LOL.

  24. I'm tellin' ya, glitters with a matte topcoat take on an ethereal quality!

I recently bought a handful of those Sinful glitters. Your nails become opal stones using the Pink 4 Ever with a matte topcoat. Breathtakingly beautiful!

  25. both of those glitters are gorgeous, and the matte coat is looking great, do you know if all three are to be available at sally's, and when? also loove your blog and all your swatches

  26. Scrangie! There you go, torturing me with your gorgeous China Glaze glitters and your beautiful swatches again. I'm dying here! I can't get the glitters in Singapore yet! Help!

  28. My first visit to your site was a pleasant surprise--you have many of the same tastes I do in polish! And you're even MORE of a freak for it than I am. I'm so in love with you!
    Anyways.
Mattes--I would love you to do some swatches showing the different matte topcoats, against a good straightup matte polish. If you're looking for something new to do. Some of them as you well know are not as good as others.

  29. That Fortune Teller with matte topcoat looks freaking awesome!! I can only hope that someday someone is selling that in ebay so I can get my hands on it.

  40. Hi!

    Nice nails!
Do you know how ChGl "Matte Magic" differs from ChGl "Man Matte Finish Nail Treatment"? Are they the same?

    Thanks!!

  41. picked up fortune teller yesterday from sally's. i had to ask for it and it was in back. i believe it's for display next month. they had fortune teller, dreamsicle, and glacier for the halloween display. hope they have matte magic soon!

  42. !!!!!!!!!!! lol as soon as I get Matte about you...

AGH. lol I always liked China Glaze better, too! :(

    ReplyDelete
  43. I was wondering how the matte topcoats apply...is it like matte nail polishes or can you just apply it like any old top coat?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I got Fortune Teller today and the Sally's that I got it at also had it in the back. I had to ask them for it and they were wondering how I knew about it, haha.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I went to Sally's yesterday and they had Fortune Teller in the back room. The lady showed it to me, but said it wouldn't be for sale for two weeks. I was frustrated but didn't want to push the issue as this is the Sally's I regularly go to. Maybe I need to take a road trip and demand they sell it to me because I need this polish and the matte topcoat and the Spellbound glitter topcoat!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I cant wait for halloween, and tying on crazy fun nails like these :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I just got Fortune Teller at Sally's this weekend. It is so hot! Can't wait to try it matte.

  49. I just got my Fortune Teller from Sally's; they told me that it's supposed to hit the shelves on October 15th but since I went in looking for it specifically, they sold it to me--the girl working at the counter confirmed it's a Sally's exclusive.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Finally today my Sally's store got the Matte Magic topcoat in so I could copy this look! It is to DIE for...it really does look like lava or fire and soot.
Sadly still no Spellbound here, but I can't wait to try it with the matte topcoat.
    Thanks for the suggestion!

  51. After searching at 5 different Sally's I finally found Fortune Teller today! I am wearing it as you suggested - with Matte Magic - and I LOVE IT! I was hesitant to join the matte bandwagon, but with this one I'm going to just hop right on!
