Orly Fall 2008: Gems Collection Swatches

This collection was a surprise to me! I heard nothing about it until I saw it online when I was ordering my France polishes. It's a good surprise, though, it's an awesome collection!

I realized that I don't feature Orly (YARLY.) very much on here... It's not intentional! I really do like Orly, they just don't seem to release new collections as often at the other polish companies. If you can't tell, I'm a sucker for 'new'. I'm always curious about new and exciting polishes, makeup, fragrance, hell, anything 'new'!

The only thing I don't like about Orly is that they take for-ev-er to dry. I always seem to ruin my nails when I'm wearing Orly because I can't wait for them to dry.

Anyway, on to the gems.

Here they are, all lined up. Look, they come with cute rings! They don't fit on my tiny fingers, but they fit the bottle nicely. Star of Bombay, Golden Maharaja, Mandalay Ruby, Sea of Light, Golden Jubilee, Midnight Star.

Golden Jubilee. Bright orangey gold shimmer. Very bright. Sparkly. Mmm.

Star of Bombay, Super deep dark blue with the faintest hint of shimmer. The shimmer is almost invisible on the nail, except on very bright light.

Sea of Light. A peachy-coral-pink kind of color with a blueish-purple shimmer overlay. Almost duochrome, but not quite.

Golden Maharaja. My favorite out of the collection. Gorgeous rich brown with golden shimmer. This bubbled badly seconds after applying. I'm not sure why. Must be an Orly thing.

Mandaly Ruby. Medium red creme. That pretty much says it all.

Midnight Star. Very pretty frosty deep purple. It's like a purple/silver fusion. This one also bubbled very badly just seconds after application. What's up with that?? I bubbled before I could even take a picture of it. Lame! Still an awesome color, though.

Hooray for nice surprises!

On a totally unrelated note, have any of you been having trouble with your China Glaze polishes lately? Every time I try to wear a China Glaze polish, it takes hours to dry. This is happening with old and new formula polishes. The other day I tried to wear Passion In The Pacific with Seche as a topcoat, and eight hours later I could still dent the polish. Same with Side Saddle on my toes. Is it just the weather, or do they really take that long to dry? I didn't have this problem with any of the Ink collection, but every other collection seems to be doing it now. Hmmm...

  1. not too too crazy about this one...a couple pretty ones, the pink-coral, the gold..but the drying time makes time makes the decision final...im too impatient!!
so ..good time to ask then ... what are a few polishes you find the fastest for drying without quick dry stuff scrangie?? (i dont have SV...just To Dry For by essie...have you tried that one? comments? i know you recomend SV)

  2. Danielle, if you only do two coats, OPI is definitely the fastest drying. The next fastest is Rimmel Play Fast, and then Color Club. All of those dry pretty fast without quick-dry products. I haven't tried To Dry For, but I have a bottle of Good To Go I've never used... Hmmm... I'll have to give it a try! SV is definitely my favorite, though. :D

  3. On the fence with these ones... the orange is my fave but still, hmmm... None of my CG have taken long to dry with seche... although it peels off the next day with every single mani!! I've tried it wet, dry, I dunno where I'm going wrong.

You made me lol with the OPI 'mom' colours.
I thought, 'yeah, they really are, that took the words right out of my mouth'. Then...'Hey, I AM a mom!!' DS is only 1 though, so I reckon I'm a funky neon CC flower power mom ;-)

  4. you should definatly try it and let me know i was going to order a bottle and thanks for the little list i requested :) glad to hear about opi that seems to be what is most available to me here as is rimmel :) but i wish so badly i could find CC (their colours..specifically bbrights are to die for... and im super pumped because my girlfriend found a place just over the border for me that aparent has a WALL of CG!!! SO EXCITED (if only RBL could be that accesible) ..but i only really want them for the 1 part pigment 1 part glass 1 part butter and one part...fairy dust was it...or glitter??lol!!! and the sponge bob colours!! heh..
<3Keep doing what you do...(cuz you do it so good!!! :)

  5. I dunno if you saw my rant on MUA, but I could not for the life of me to get shorty pants to dry. seriously, two hours later i picked up my cat, and hair stuck too it! I even pulled out my hair dryer, and it didn't dry. Yesterday I did china glaze second hand silk and it dried like that!

    ReplyDelete
  6. yuck hope my shorty pants doesnt do that..bestfriend put in on with some to-dry-for and had no problems ... wouldnt imagine furry polish to be very appealing lol

  7. I popped a new bottle of Chiaroscuro for yesterday's mani, and yes, in common with all my other CGs, it took a while to dry, and was worrysomely soft under the SV.

As regards the Orlys, I am struck dumb. The whole collection is just *lovely*. Bother!

  8. OMG YES! Scrangie you rock for posting swatches of this collection! I NEED that gorgeous blue and brown!

As to China Glaze, no not at all that's really odd. Mine all dry very fast. I use Seche Vite or Orly in A Snap TCs.

  9. OMG! Star of Bombay is HOT!

  10. I have on Passion in the Pacific right now and it took FOREVER to dry. I ended up denting or screwing up almost every nail. I don't want to take it off because the color is so pretty but it looks bad :( Guess I'll need a quick-dry.

  11. Thank you for the swatches Scrangie! I was hoping this collection would have more sparkle to it.

Note had any drying time problems with ChG but I am having issues with Hot Topic.

  12. Thank you for posting these!

Whew! I'm not insane - I posted on the nailboard that the blue didn't have shimmer, or if it did, I couldn't see it when I looked at the bottle in the store.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hey girl! Awesome swatches, i'm so glad i'm getting a few of these :) The hidden shimmer in the blue is exactly what i was hoping for!

  14. haha i know you probably dont care but your more interested than he is!!! :( lol... any ways i just found a bunch of OOLLDD nail polish from yrs ago... all ugly ass hell..except my favourite one when i was like 13!!it was my fave to layer over black!!sally hanson "nail prisms" in turqouise opal (do they still make these?!?!?!)...so i went and bought "my black" that everygirl needs... nicole razzle dazzler..and nicoles were on sale 6.99! 15. I did the same thing! I fell in love with Bombay and Maharaja when I was ordering my opis. I LOVE them!

    ReplyDelete
  16. DAMN! i ordered the gold...can't believe it's that orange. as always, thanks for the swatches!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Scrangie - I didn't need the Orlys, why must you post pretty pictures and make me want them? :)

Danielle - I'm guessing you're in Canada, like me...Color Club is often in little tiny independent salons, at least that's where I've found it. Chatters and Sally Beauty sell China Glaze here. Hope that helps you find stuff you want!

    ReplyDelete
  18. gymnastgirl... thank you so much!! i will be going to st.catherine or niagara falls and checking now... thanks so much :)
    Danielle

  19. Scrangie, you did it again! Thank you for the swatches, I was very curious about this collection, I didn't think to find any swatches. You're always a big help! :) Thank you!
I must say the collection doesn't empress me, though.

    ReplyDelete
  20. what do you mean orly (yarly)? is that how orly is pronounced?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Star of Bombay is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pretty! I hadn't even heard of this collection, thanks a million times over for posting, you are wonderful to get these swatches done so fast!

I love Golden Jubilee as well. Unfortunately, I learned from Orly Crush on You that I am unable to pull off oranges with my pale, cool-toned skin. :( I still think it's so gosh darn purty, it's a shame that I'm pale as a ghost.

The rest of the collection is sorta meh. There are some I may end up buying if I see them in person. But right now, Star of Bombay is the real winner.

Thanks again for alerting me to this collection and for your fabulous swatches. You're a very hard working beauty blogger.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Okay, the only one I really like is the Bombay! Hmm... tråkig kollektion!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for these gorgeous swatches, I was secretly hoping you would post some from this collection! I really like Golden Maharaja! Never thought I would, I thought my fave was going to be Golden Jubilee :) Totally going for the golden browns this season.. :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I ordered Star of Bombay and the Maharadja-something last week. I was thinking about the purple one but decided against it, don't know why... So, I am waiting. I only have three Orly polishes, Goth(of course), Heartnbreaker(hate it) and Close your eyes(nice). I have not found any of these slow when it comes to drying, but my experience is slim with Orly.

    ReplyDelete
  25. But Sminkan, Heartbreaker is one of my faves! Can't believe you're not liking it! (Scrangie it was me who talked Sminkan into getting it... now she won't take any advices from me anymore! LOL J/K!)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Misery! It's been about 24 hours since I read this post, and I've just cracked and ordered the whole lot of them. At this rate, I should really be looking at trying to grow some new hands.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love your blog! The pictures are great. You have helped me decide what NPs I'm going to buy today.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have a question - we all want to be healthy right? We use the big 3 free formulas right? Then why do so many still use Seche Vite - read the ingredients - it's not healthy stuff people. Use a healthy topcoat or don't bother with the using healthy color. Yes it's shiny, yes, it dries quickly but is it worth risking your health for? This is specifically for those of you who are expecting.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Carla G, lol! Well, not thinking specifically of moms in general, but thinking of maybe something our moms would wear :D

Danielle, yes fairy dust! lol :) Maybe if I email CC asking about Canadian retailers, they can give me a list!

Anonymous, that's odd! I didn't have any problems with my Shorty Pants, but I only did two coats and it wasn't really that warm or humid out the day I wore it... Hmm, mabe the humidity is ruining my China Glazes???

Liz, aw, at least Orly is not as expensive as OPI :) I do really like this Orly collection a LOT!

Katherine, thank you :) Maybe it's just me, I never used to have problems with China Glaze but now all of a sudden they're all doing it to me!

Samhainophobia, you would rock that color :) You wear vampy colors amazingly well!

Colleen, I completely ruined my Passion In The Pacific. I even took a picture of how bad it was. So pretty though. *sigh*

Tink, I haven't tried the Hot Topic ones yet, but I really liked the look of the neon green and the glitter ones... Hmmm...

Sania, yes, it's very hard to see the shimmer, it's there but it's almost invisible!

Hillary, thank you :) I really like this blue, I think I might add something on top, maybe some Fireflies or Wireless :)

Danielle, NAIL PRISMS!!! Those rock!! They are discontinued, and I wish they would make more! I wish I had kept all of my old nail polishes :( I used to have some really weird ones!

Anonymous, yay I'm glad! I love them too :)

Laura, it totally didn't look that orange on the website. I wasn't expecting it! I wish those little bottle pictures were more accurate!

Gymnastgirly, hehehe that's what I'm here for ;-) And thank you, I'm glad I have some Canadians reading who know where to get this stuff, sometimes I feel a little bad cause I don't know what stores sell what in Canada!

Dani, thank you :) I'm glad that my swatches can help people form an opinion about nail polishes- I feel accomplished! :)

Hallie, lol, it's a little joke. ORLY is sort of slang for Oh Really, and YARLY is the response (Yeah, really!) I encounter this kind of vocabulary when I'm playing massively multiplayer online games :)

Grace, wow, thank you SO much! I am happy to be able to help my fellow nail junkies! I love the whole collection except the red, I just can't do reds, they don't excite me!

Rocketqueen, at least it will save you some money to spend on other fall collections :) (Jag forstar!)

Lina-Elvira, the golden browns are soooo pretty, reminds me of the leaves changing colors in autumn :)

Sminkan, Orly has some really nice colors. If you like Goth you might like Velvet Rope- dark purple with silver glitter :)

    Rocketqueen, LOL!! ;-)

Liz, lol! You can wear a different color on each finger :)

Rydellpink, hooray! I'm glad my pictures were able to help you decide :)

Anonymous, personally, I believe that there is no evidence that nail polish is harmful to your health with average use. And, also, nail polish was much better before they removed the chemicals! I wish companies would give use a choice about whether or not we want the chemicals instead of just removing them. After all, it's my decision about what I want to expose my body to! I am not the least bit concerned about the chemicals in my nail polish, but I'm sure some people are.

    ReplyDelete
  30. As for the Anon comment - I don't give much damn about always using 3Free! Well, not at all to be honest. The formulas really were much better in the old days! I do think it's good for the environment to use "safer" stuff, but frankly, nail polish isn't really good to nature at all! I'm just too ego and interested to give up nail polish.

    ReplyDelete
  31. How can i say it?.....Orly is not my cup of tea.
The collection is nice but i can't say anymore about it.

  32. im so bummed that they arent around :( i better concerce this bottle!! and i know!! i was readin a while ago about you chucking out your old polishes...but now they are probably ALL discontinued scrangie!! how sad :( ..also sad? that lack of selection of nailpolish at my shioppers..and the new price raise on their "never friggin restocked" nicoles! 10.49!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( im soo bummed... theres a place NECT DOOR to it that i could buy ALLLL the discount beauty products io want...with a friggin liscence :(

  34. Hey Danielle,

I am also a Canadian and in Toronto, so it sounds like you aren't too far away. I definitely would recommend Trade Secrets here, and some towns have Sally's Beauty Supply. If you go to a hairdresser who also does nails, you can ask if they can pick up some polish for you when they purchase their supplies (my hairdresser rents a chair at the salon she works at, and buys everything for herself...luckily she is a polish fiend like me and will pick up some nps once or twice a year:).

    Hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Rocketqueen, we agree :) I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that way!

    Nitzan, ah I understand :)

Danielle, yes, very sad! I think ALL of them are discontinued! And for the CC- I emailed them and they said that it is available in Canada, but they would like to know what region you are in so they can give me some locations to buy them- let me know what part of Canada you are near and I'll give you all the info they give me :)

Melli, thank you! That's great advice- I would never have thought of that!

  36. hey meli!! sweet more Canadians!:) and one who is probably less than an hour away the way *he drives lol... anyways thank you so much!! i went there on my first week of polish craze with my girlfrien mel..lol... i went looking for essie though (they had none i wanted) and now that i think about it...they had a WICKED opi collection!! thanks so much! 41. Danielle, I'm pretty sure that the old Sally Hansens are 3-free (just checked the ingredients on one of my nail prisms) but older OPIs and Essies still have the lovely chemicals (black labeled OPI and Essies) :D

    ReplyDelete
  42. for meli..
wow enough comments for today...but meli i meant trade secret ...if your wondering... :-S shit i look crzy..too many comments im soo sorry

    ReplyDelete
  43. :-O you still have nail prisms!! which ones...i have turqoouise somethinh (makes my nails look like therepainted with beetle or something lmao with black underneath) have you layer it under black? (probably lol)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Danielle,

Not a problem...nail polish gets me very excited too!

    To everyone,
As for my advice about asking your hairdresser (or nail tech for that matter), let me tell you it is worth it. I got a bunch of discontinued OPI colours (e.g. Pooltime Lime and Tangerini Bikini, Hong Kong Sunrise), all for 3 dollars or less a bottle (some were 1 dollar a bottle!). The prices at most public beauty supply stores here are usually between 9-12 dollars for OPI, Zoya, China Glaze, and Essie. So if you are friendly with your hairdresser/nail tech, definitely ask, especially if you are on a budget.

    ReplyDelete
  45. meli how much opi at TS?
    Danielle

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi Danielle,

OPI is usually about 10 dollars at Trade Secrets.

  47. hey meli

  48. Danielle, I have a couple :) Amber Ruby, Lavender Pearl and Lavender Sky!

  49. i found a whole bunch on e bay for so cheap that you can get three of the same colour for less then ten bucks lol those polishes rock :)
    Danielle

    ReplyDelete
  50. Danielle, excellent! :D I love them!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Another request (I'm sorry for asking for so many):

Could you compare Golden Maharajah (sp?) to ChG Unplugged, Borghese Brown Espresso, OPI I'm Fondue of You...or other sparkly brown colors? Take your time, and thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Golden Maharaja and MS (the purple one) are gorgeous! Too bad that they take long to dry, AND bubble! T_T I would so get them otherwise...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Kinna84, aww! Well, there are a lot of shimmery brown colors like Golden Maharaja, so maybe you could try China Glaze Unplugged instead? I can't think of a direct match to Midnight Star :( But, they're so inexpensive it might still be worth trying them if you really LOVE the colors :D
