Orly Plastix Matte/Satin Finish Collection Summer 2010

Another collection I'm just not feeling the love for... can't wait for the rest of the fall and winter collections to bring us some sparkle!

Old School Orange. Light/medium orange creme with a semi-matte finish.

Purple Pleather. Does not look this blue in real life, but it's a blue-based purple creme with semi-matte finish.

Retro Red. Light coral red creme with semi-matte finish.

Viridian Vinyl. Medium teal creme with semi-matte finish. A bit darker and greener in real life, somewhat similar to Sally Hansen Fairy Teal.

The formula on these was good. Thick, which is normal for mattes, but not terribly difficult to apply. Drying time is fast, which is also normal for mattes. The only problem I had was some bubbling because of the thickness of the polish and it's more obvious because there's not shimmer to hide it.

I know a lot of people liked these, but I'm not really understanding the point of these. From the press release I thought they'd be a new type of finish with the look of plastic, either totally matte like on some electronics or very glossy and glassy looking like hard plastic. But these? They're half-assed matte. I personally can not stand that rubbery, sorta shiny but sorta dull half matte (or satin) finish. To me it looks like I've been wearing a matte polish for a week already... I want my mattes to be matte! Cause they end up looking like this after a day or so anyway. That and there's nothing terribly special about these colors. I mean, they're good colors, but honestly it's nothing you can't do with a regular polish and a matte topcoat. Purple Pleather looks kinda like China Glaze Grape Pop, Viridian Vinyl looks like Sally Hansen Fairy Teal, Old School Orange looks like OPI Flit a Bit and I'm sure Retro Red looks like something but I can't think of a light red at the moment.

So.... yeah... that's my thoughts on these. I just don't get it. No offense intended if you love these, I just think there's nothing unique about them!

Luckily the Cosmic FX collection made up for Plastix's lack of awesomeness. I'll get to posting that soon.

  1. A couple of weeks ago I wanted this collection like crazy. I can't even tell why, seriously, but yes.
Then looked at some swatches and changed my mind :D
Well, yeah, semimatte, okay, but it's so... ugh.
And yes, colours are not that unique. Still I'd buy the orange and teal, but using topcoats anyway. I just don't own any shades like these.

  2. Thank you! You are the first person I've heard that doesn't care for these (other than myself). The colors aren't anything spectacular and if they're going to do matte, do matte, not half-assed matte. I'm right there with ya!

  3. I didn't care for plastix either...
I thoight it was going to be like those real rubberized plastic finishes...
    Agree the colors are meh...

  4. The colors might not be that special at all, but I love that I can snap a manicure that is decent looking (no frazzle, no cleanup) and Poshe and I'm good to go. That's why I like them so much. Purple Pleather is gorgeous, I really love it. However I wouldn't wear them without a top coat. The reason I bought them was cause I'm often in a rush and need to do my nails quickly. These ones work perfectly for this and dry super fast.

    Thanks for the swatches!

  5. I found these a little "meh" also. From what I've seen, they don't look any different from all the other mattes.I think I'll pass.

  6. I really did want these at first, but for some reason I keep passing over them at Sally Beauty whenever I am there. I didn't like the finish after I saw it in person, but those bottles sure did look pretty all lined up in their display!

  7. I wish I'd waited to see this post before I ordered the whole collection. I'd seen them on other blogs and loved the finish on them. Tried them out with a skittles manicure. Not thrilled at all. I wanted them more matte or as you said a high gloss plastic. Phooey!

  8. The only one of these that I might actually buy is the red. It reminds me of a pair of red leather pants I had way back when. Otherwise everytime I see the display I cant help but look, but all it takes is to see the swatch hanging off the display to sway me away. I think I'll save my money for a better collection.

  9. I wouldn't get these just because they are very unforgiving but your application is the best I seen so far!

  10. I bought the retro red in June and liked it- it is a different finish than just using a matte top coat because I tried it and compared them and it is much more matte (I used the essie one). I think the retro red is a nice color and the finish is unique-I get a lot of compliments when I wear it.

  11. I really wanted to try these, thinking they had a cool gelly/Barbie plastic nail thing going on. I finally got the purple at Sally's and ended up taking it back. Half-assed matte is right! I have a couple matte top coats and a bunch of purple creams, so this polish seemed redundant. Too bad. I can't wait to try the cosmic fx!!

  12. I initially thought the colors would give of a look like a mannequin's skin perhaps but I don't think it comes close. Maybe to Barbie's rubbery skin (the older Barbie's).

  13. blah. I don't care for these at all. Of course I haven't been wowed all this year as most offerings have been matte finish and I prefer KAPOW, in your face polishes. Of course to each their own and I am sure many will find these lovely. Thanks for posting them!

  14. I don't know...there isn't anything particularly unique about the colors, though they do look very nice and rich. The finish is kinda neat, if understated. I would give these a big *shrug*, though I might pick some up if I get the chance.

  15. the finish looks like you dipped your hands in lard after putting a matte top coat on. lol.

  17. I was VERY curious about these and thinking about the purple and red thinking also "I love vinyl!" but knowing they are a hard to apply shoddy matte I will save my money for a bottle of Manglaze Matteastophy instead!
