OPI Fall 2009 Coleccion de España

OPI's polishes for fall 2009 are another destination-themed collection. This time it's based on the colors of Spain.

Ate Berries In The Canaries. Bright berry pink. Really pretty and surprisingly bright for a fall collection! It's a gorgeous bright pink-purple creme. The sunlight picture pulls out more of the warm tones in the polish while the indoor picture brings out the cool tones. It's in between the two. More pink than purple, a little bit similar to OPI I'm India Mood For Love. Same type of color.

Barefoot In Barcelona. Soft pinkish nude. Another spin on Rescue Beauty Lounge Grunge? This one is very putty-like. Odd color. I can't decide if I like it or not. In some lights it seems more brown, in others more pink. It's unusual, but we're seeing more of these colors lately, so I guess it's not as unusual now...

Bullish On OPI. Red-orange creme. This is more orange than red, maybe what I would consider 'brick'. This one feels more like fall to me. I don't get the name... maybe it's a play on words? The only thing I think of when I read "Bullish" is "Bullshit" but I don't think that's what they meant. Intentional or not, I got a laugh out of it!

Can You Tapas This? Red-brown creme. Like chocolate and red wine! Or maybe mole. Not the animal, the sauce. I really like this one, this one is also more of a fall shade.

Conquistadorable Color. Raspberry creme. Not really very interesting, I feel like I've seen this color a million times. It's bright, it's smooth, it's candy-like. Next!

Give Me Moor! Vampy eggplant shimmer. This is really very dark, almost black. Black cherry... Eggplant... A dark, vampy shade with a reddish-purple tinge. It also has barely noticeable shimmer. Applying this is strange- it's a sheer base with a lot of little dark speckles!

Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow. Very dark green with slight shimmer. WOOHOO!!! A real green! OPI did a green, I knew they had it in them! This is just a bit darker than I had hoped, but at least it's green. It does look almost black in most lights. It has a small amount of shimmer like Give Me Moor! but it looks like a speckled creme most of the time.

Manicurist Of Seville. Berry red creme. Nothing wrong with the color at all, but don't we have enough berry-colored cremes already? I'm getting a little sick of them, to tell you the truth... Moving on...

No Spain, No Gain. Red-purple creme. Wow, almost all cremes. I'm surprised! Anyway, this is mostly purple to my eye, but it's a very red based one. So red based, in fact, that it's also veering dangerously close to berry territory.

Pamplona Purple. Purple creme. This is gorgeous!! Absolutely gorgeous! Like I've said before, I can never get enough purple cremes and this one is especially nice. My picture makes it look way more blue than it actually looks in real life. It's not a Can You Dig It? dupe, I'd call it closer to that one from the France collection, the name escapes me at the moment...

Pink Flamenco. Hot blue-toned pink. Another love! And another odd choice for fall. Seriously, brights for fall? Has OPI been drinking too much Sangria? Well, I'm not usually happy about pinks, but I love this one. It's the only type of pink that looks good on me. It's only a couple shades off from Ate Berries In The Canaries, but this is more purple and that one is more pink. Same kind of I'm India Mood For Love cool pink shade.

Suzi Skis In The Pyrenees. Smoky dark blue shimmer. Very strange shade. It looks smoky. Crazy smoky blue. I really don't have many shades like this, this is definitely unique in my collection. The closest comparable colors I can think of are Orgasm Hard Day's Night and Carolyn New York Frankie Joins The Navy, but neither are dupes. So a smoky blue-grey base with barely perceptible shimmer, a lot like the other hidden shimmer shades in this collection.

The formula on these was top notch. Thin, smooth, flawless, super-fast drying, pretty much perfect. No complaints on the formula. Well... maybe... not really a complaint, but an observation... These are thinner than the previous collections. Not a bad thing, but unexpected. The pro-wide brushes in these have also undergone another change. They don't seem as wide and moppy, more flat and square this time. And a cool detail- the brush stem now says OPI! Very cool! One more observation, the labels on these have black text. Did I get a weird batch? Let me know if yours have black text or the traditional three-free indicating green text.

This was an odd collection. The promo pictures were pretty misleading. From the promo pictures I saw, I was salivating at all the pretty purples and vampy shades. I didn't expect these shades at all! And brights for fall?? I'm not complaining, I love brights, but OPI is usually so traditional when they do seasonal collections, I was surprised to see that these weren't all vampy fall shades.

I would have liked to see fewer berry and red shades and more browns or golds or other fall colors. I am craving fall colors right now, so brights aren't doing it for me. I was happy that the two pinks included were my favorite kind. This means I can actually wear them, unlike the unflattering warm pinks they seem to release every 15 minutes.

Overall, unexpected but not bad. I would wear at least half of these shades. This was a frustrating collection to photograph because berries and purples always do weird things to my camera. I'm a little disappointed at all the cremes and berry shades. I was hoping for another Black Cherry Chutney-type vampy fall shimmer collection. But from the looks of it, this will be a creme-filled fall. Haha, that sounds funny.

Official release date for OPI's Spain Collection (La Coleccion De España) is August 5th.

What do you think? Are you as surprised as I am?

  7. Scrangie, would you be willing to swatch some more colors from Diamond? I LOVE Diamond but the colors are so hard to see on their site -- even harder than on other sites.

    I would be grateful!

  8. lovin' Barefoot in Barcelona. Reminds me of Orly's Pink Chocolate, for some reason but that one is darker. Great post, Girl!!

  9. Love Here today... Aragon tomorrow.
But Espana collection is little boring to me?

    Great swatches Scrangie :)

  11. Barefoot in Barcelona seems kind of interesting, though there has been that kind of shades around lately as you said.

I rewarded you with the Adorable Blog Award in my blog, as I have found your nail pics extremely useful and informative (and beautiful!) for a long time. Thank you for keeping posting them! :)

  15. barefoot in barcelona looks like tickle my france-y.
where do you get all those not-yet-released polishes from?!

  16. ref "Bullish on OPI" - Bullish is a stock trading term, it means favourable or positive on a stock/security, in this case OPI. The opposite is bearish. But also a play on the theme as Spain is known for its bullfighting.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Beautiful swatches!!! I think "Bullish on OPI" means: first the red piece of fabric the matador uses in bullfightings, which Spain is famous for. And then bullish means something like successful buisness:)

  18. Thank you for the swatches! I am quite taken with Suzi Skis In The Pyrenees, Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow and Give me Moor! I think these polishes are beautiful on your nails.

  19. Sort of disappointed with this collection, but given it's been ages since I've been truly excited by OPI that's not unexpected. I just wish there was a single color in it that I thought I needed as I've been obsessed with going back to Spain ever since I had the good fortune to visit Barcelona last summer. The colors are all pretty, but not terribly unique or craving-inducing. I had been excited by the prospect of Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow but I hate colors that are so dark they look black in most lights. I'm down with dark colors, but I want to be able to tell I'm not wearing black when I see my tips. Otherwise, why not just paint them black?

  20. I don't mind this collection at all but I'm a little disappointed that there are not many shimmers. The berry/purple cremes look great though.

Here Today Aragon Tomorrow looked promising but for some reason I thought the green wouldn't be as dark. Oh well...

Also, Give Me Moor looks similar Lincoln Park At Midnight... but maybe it's my monitor?

Anyway, great swatches as always :)

  21. meh. i hoped for a cool dark green so much but this one is a bit to dark for me i think. :/
as beeing not one of the classic pink/red girls, there is not much i need from this collection.
buuut barefoot to barcelona seems to be cool-odd :D

  22. Your swatches are great as always! My favourites from this collection are Suzi, Aragon and Give Me Moore. I also loved the formula! For the golden shades, I'm holding out for the holiday collection... =)

  23. I'm really disappointed in this collection!! The promo images looked so promising and now that I've seen swatches I don't think I want any of them, except for maybe that purple cream. The green one is a big let down, it's just too black. Overall I'm not feeling this collection at all - NEXT! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I guess I actually do need 3 or 4 of these though I do wish they were true to the original promo pictures.

I'm surprised by Suzi Skis In The Pyrenees - it's the only one I like more than the promo pic. I thought this was going to be a really dark gray, which I have plenty of. This is different, I really like it!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks for the pics Scrangie! Honestly there really isn't any shade that screams at me to buy it... I may end up getting the 2 hot pinks, Pamplona Purple and Suzi Skis but we'll see :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have all twelve of these, but I haven't fallen in love with a single one of them... Think this collection is rather disappointing.

My favourite collection for fall will probably be ChG Retro Diva. Loved your swatches!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think I also would have liked to see more vampy colors (I can't get enough, no matter how many I own) but I do like some of these colors, especially Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees.
And I agree on the berry-red cremes: enough already!
    Great swatches; thanks for posting!

  28. I was most excited to see what the green one looked like on the nail, but it was a huge disappointment.

Your swatches are superb as usual, but the green was way too dark. It's a pet peeve of mine when a colour looks black almost all the time. I don't want to have to put my hands up to a light bulb just to see that, oh yeah, there's a hint of green. Had OPI made the green a few shades lighter, it would've been a massive hit.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I definitely want Suzi Skis In The Pyrenees and maybe the Tapas one. Possibly Barefoot in Barcelona. You look great in them all as usual. :)

  30. I just got back from spending two years in the canaries - they and mainland spain especially make a lot of wine and so produce millions of berries [the common person would more think that happens in France!]

Anyway, I think Bullish is named so [and a red too] because bull fights are pretty popular in spain. Yeah, red.

so ... I really like "Can you tapas this?" Unfortunately, though, I don't get OPI here - and I'm banned from buying on the internet :(

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am not so keen on this collection. Where are the vibrant oranges, golds and browns that are associated with Moorish Spain? What about the blues and greens of the Mediterranean? I agree with others' point that Here Today...Aragon Tomorrow is too dark. All in all, it looks dupe-ish to the Zoya collection, which I think I prefer.

I think my wallet is pretty safe this fall...except for the RBL polishes to come :).

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh goodness, I think I might just want every single colour. This is rare for me! I usually pick a few jems, but this one might bust my bank!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks for the beautiful swatches as usual Scrangie :) Can you Tapas this is my favourite

    ReplyDelete
  34. for the most part these colors are really pretty. Though they don't all scream fall to me, but theres no rule to say you can't wear pink in the fall lol. i am kinda wanting here today..aragon tomorrow even though its almost black..i LOVE LOVE LOVE greens

    ReplyDelete
  35. Great swatches! It gonna be difficult to choose.
Btw, I put some of your swatches on my blog, hope you don't mind (of course I mentionned you as the source).

  36. I don't think that this colection is all bad, but you are right in that nothing is super original. I am one who really likes pink and berry creams, so these are right up my ally, not to mention that I am a super sucker for the ProWide Brush. I am glad to hear that it is less WIDE and more squareish. Makes for good application IMO!

My favs are Ate Berries, No Spain No Gain, Pamplona Purple (gorg!), Pink Famenco, and Suzi Skis! I agree with everyone else that the green is too dark. I am on the fence about Give Me Moor - it looks to close to LPAM and Essie Damsel in a Dress. Thanks so much for the beautiful swatches!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow...I usually want at least 1 or 2 shades from OPI fall collex but this one is a dud. I am totally passing. Hopefully, the holiday one will be better. BOO OPI!

    ReplyDelete
  38. On these bottles http://lackoholic.com/page/2/ the text looks green.

  39. I was so excited when I saw the promotional ads, but the only one I really want is "Pamplona Purple." It reminds me of Collection de France's "Louvre Me, Louvre Me Not" without the shimmer!

I really wanted "Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow" to be more green like in the promotional ads. What happened OPI?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am very excited about these colors, there are a bunch in this collection that I want - more so now seeing your swatches. Can't wait for the release!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have been searching for a good emerald green since May. I settled for Sally Hanson's Insta-Dri in Jumpin' Jade. So excited that O.P.I. and Zoya are jumping on board! Which color - Envy or Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow - has a more emerald tint?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank you so much for all the recent OPI swatches :)) The more I am looking at the spanish collection the more I am liking them - they all look great on your nails. I'm having trouble choosing my 6 favs!

Also, p'ssion?? has mentioned OPI suede shades? Any ideas suede polishes are please? The shades look good but i've never heard of suede polish before.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Scrangie, I love your comment on "Here today... Aragon tomorrow": "OPI did a green, I knew they had it in them!"
I just had to laugh. You are so sweet! :-D
    And you are right ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I really think I will buy most of these. Unless I get tired of looking at them on everyone's blogs. If I do than the color must not be that special. I wish the green wasn't so dark. They could've made it a shade lighter. Quit the berries and reds. Aren't there enough to go around.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The pics looked great! I am very excited about this collection. There are several I'd like to get...like the dark green and the blue. :) Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Dear Scrangie, thank you for the great swatches! One question: Could you compare the following polishes: a) "No Spain, No Gain" - Zoya "Ciara" and b) "Pamplona Purple" - Zoya "Demi"

    ReplyDelete
  47. How did I miss this post? I'm actually really excited with several of these colors, mainly because it seems that the matte polish by Essie tends to lighten things up a bit. I wonder how Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow would look matted? Would its green beauty show through a little more?

I am betting that Barefoot in Barcelona would look beautious on darker complexions, especially matted.

I just about keeled over when I saw Can You Tapas This? This is a color that just screamed out to me. It looks great on your complexion, and it's definitely an appropriate fall color.

I just can't wait until I can get my hands on the Essie mattifier, because really, I'm obsessed with thinking about how colors I wouldn't traditionally wear would look mattified.

Thanks again, Scrangie, for your fantastic swatches!

  48. I really like more of the colors than i thought. do you know when the collection will be in stores? I cant wait to start wearing dark fall colors again!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well, I'm gonna get Give me moor, Suzi skis in he pyrenees, here today aragon tomorrow and pamplona purple. other than that, I don't normally do any of the other colros,so I'll only go for the vampy ones.

  50. Scrangie, your swatches are beautiful! How did master painting your nails with such wonderful skill? I'm really looking forward to this collection, especially Barefoot in Barcelona, and Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow. I found someone in Singapore who's started selling the collection! Hurrays!

  54. they are pretty!! i love the pink/purple shades, but i'm so sick of reds and borderline black colors.

do you know if Pamploma Purple is close to Sephora by OPI's What a Broad? If you have both do you think you could do a side by side comparison? thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Is it me or Give Me Moor looks exactly like LPAD? i love this color, but i have LPAD already.
i loved the Ate Berries in the Canaries, such a great shade. And the new brush rocks!

    ReplyDelete
  56. LOVE THEM ALL AND THEY ARE SELLING WELL...DON'T KNOW WHAT THE COMPLAINTS ARE ALL ABOUT AND WE ALL NEED SOME BRIGHT COLOURS THIS TIME OF YEAR...AS FOR MORE BROWNS AND GOLDS WE HAVE ENOUGH OF THOSE AND THEY DONT SELL - GREAT COLOURS WE ALL LOVE THEM AT WORK AND WE USE THEM EVERYDAY SO WE SHOULD KNOW!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Barefoot in Barcelona is gorgeous - it looks like Sephora by OPI's Casting Call.

Also wth with Pink Flamenco?? It looks exactly like India Mood For Love!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I guess this is the stereotyped vision OPI has of Spain. Lots of reds and pinks when we, as the rest of the blogosphere, have succumbed to the charms of the nudes, taupes, Paradoxals and the like.
It kind of reminds me of the colour range most local brands here offer, seldom getting out of their comfort zone.
I found two tiny OPI displays here in Spain for the first time in my life and they had the Texas collection, as well as a small potpurri of others. Btw, retail price here for an OPI is 15.50 EUR (22.08 USD -talk about overinflating prices).

    ReplyDelete
  59. Btw, I only own 2 OPIs and one of them happens to be 'I'm india mood for love'.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ummmm you leave me wondering if it's a mix up in your copy that you think Pink Flamingo is more purple in hue than I Ate Berries in The Canaries??? I think the opposite - Berries has much more purple to it than Pink Flamingo does. I did not gravitate to this collection when it came out, but I have gone back to a few from it since then.
