Essie Matte About You Matte Finisher

Here's Essie's contribution to this year's matte polish trend- a versatile, quick-drying matte topcoat!

Since it's an Essie topcoat, I thought it best to try it out on some of my favorite Essie polishes to see how they look matte.

My camera battery was dying, so a couple of these are sorta blurry, but you can still see how nice and matte this topcoat is:

Index to pinkie: Essie Sexy Divide, Essie Decadent Diva, Essie National Velvet, Essie Over The Top. No topcoat, just wet polish.

With one coat of Matte About You Matte Finisher.

This stuff is awesome. It dries very fast. I applied it on wet polish like I'd do with a quick-dry topcoat and it set them almost instantly. They were still dentable after five minutes, but it's been about twenty minutes now and they seem totally dry.

An advantage to this matte topcoat is that it's long-lasting. The information I got directly from Essie states that this fast-drying matte topcoat is just as long lasting as any Essie treatment or topcoat. Essie also says that wearing hand lotion is fine with this product- you can apply as much hand lotion as you want without it interfering with the product.

I can't report on wear yet as I've only had this for about a half an hour, but I'll be sure to follow up when I've had more experience with it. So far, so good.

And, if I'm gonna do matte Essie, I might as well go all the way:

That's pretty hardcore. I get butterflies in my stomach when I look at that. I didn't think Starry Starry Night could get any better, but I've proven myself wrong once again.

Essie's Matte About You Matte Finisher matte topcoat is available starting in August and will retail for $10.

  2. Wow, Starry Night looks so special when it's matte!
I can imagine that you got butterflies in your stomach from looking at this :-D
    It's amazing!

  3. SSN looks awesome!
I almost like this top coat idea better than a straight-up matte polish. I would think you could get some pretty cool combinations out of it.
Wonder what this would look like over a matte polish?

  4. THAT'S HOT
It looks a lot better than Orly's matte topcoat

  5. It's VERY matte. Essie rules.

  8. That's much better than the Orly or the Nubar matte topcoat. It's not satiny at all. I'm kinda bummed that I sprung for the KO topcoat now.

  9. Im thinking i should maybe use my matte top coat a bit more.. those are just so nice! :D

  10. That topcoat is REALLY matte! I might have to get it, rather than buying a bunch of matte polishes.

  11. Yep, that's a really really nice matte top coat! Much better than getting all the different individual polishes. Definitely gonna get that in August. Thanks for the post, Scrangie!

  19. Holy crap! Every time I turn around, I fall more and more in love with Essie. I think I like the 'satin' matte look more than the super matte chalky look (which makes me think of raking nails down dry-wall... *shudder*). None of the matte lines so far have really grabbed me, but I can definitely see myself picking up a bottle of this mattifier.

  20. I love this!
It doesn't even compare to the Orly one. I think I am going to HAVE to pick this up, instead of the matte polishes, this way you can have it both ways. Thanks for the review!

  21. Dearest Scrangie - I just started getting into nail polish and found your blog. I attempted to franken a dupe of RBL Bikini Bottom, and used your picture for reference - I hope you don't mind that I linked to it (and credited you!) on my blog!

  22. this looks amazing i wonder would it be the same over non essie polishes like would it look as good as this? hmmm :/

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ok, now I'm sold! lol
I love how Starry Starry Night still sparkles even with the matte topcoat... hmmm I wonder how ChG Ruby Pumps would look as a matte version?

I hope the etailers will sell this as well :)

  24. I must get this! I've been lemming matte polishes, but this seems a lot more practical!

    ReplyDelete
  25. This is going on my list as well. I've want to try the matte look, but I was put off by the poor wear and warnings against the use of base coat and hand lotion.

    ReplyDelete
  26. All of those look awesome! Especially Starry Starry Night! :D

    ReplyDelete
  27. Awesome! This is a much more affordable option than buying all the matte polishes that are coming out. I love Starry Starry Night both ways...too bad it was discontinued!!

    Very cool work, Scrangie!

  28. I. WANT. THAT. NOW!!!!

  29. That top coat is fantastic. So much better than anythig else out there. And it totally owns OPIs effort at matte..

  30. I'm going to need like five bottles.

  31. Whoa! Tht is amazing! The other matte top coats I've seen have been kind of blah, but that one works beautifully!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh dear! that stuff is going to (finally) make me love matte finishes :o)

    ReplyDelete
  37. That looks fantastic, Starry Starry Night with that is insanely perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Before I was wishy-washy about the matte trend, but after seeing Starry Starry Night, I'm excited to mattify some of the glittery nail polishes in my collection.

And I think it's way more practical to just get a matte top coat instead of buying full-on matte polishes.

I'm digging this Essie one, though, because you can use lotion with it. Kinda thought it was weird before how other matte top coats said to avoid it - kinda impossible since lots of hand soap has moisturizers in them!

Maybe the next thing they'll come out with is a clear matte top coat with glitter - that would be awesome!

  39. How does the matte flat top compare on duochromes?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wow, this is a total must have. Like, RIGHT NOW

  41. Hi Scrangie!
I love Starry Starry night! I am convinced now that I HAVE to get that top-coat! I think it is so crazy how all of the major nail polish brands are doing matte collections! ( Or in this case top-coats) I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  42. so far looks like the best mattifying top coat. Is there any way you can compare it to Nailtek II to see which mattifies better? PWEASE PWEASE!! *bats eyelashes*

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wasn't into mattes till you posted this, I'm really glad it lasts longer than the matte polishes and you can make any polish matte=perfect! You have also created an impossible lemming I must have SSN!

    ReplyDelete
  44. wow, these are interesting, but I still like yours (and mine :) nails - shiny! But nice invention!

  45. The Glitterati sounds like me when she said ...

"I think I like the 'satin' matte look more than the super matte chalky look (which makes me think of raking nails down dry-wall... *shudder*)."

but seen starry night.. OMG - i have to get this even if it is my first ESSIE polish!!

  46. OH...EMMM...GEE!
I have SSN by essie and I ADORE IT. I had no idea how AWESOME it would look matte! I am so running out and getting this! TY for posting. As always. your nails sells more nail polish than you can imagine! ♥

  47. Scrangie do you think we are all excited about this matte top coat? Lots of comments about it. I don't have any of these polishes. I'm going to have to order everything.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Geez... August! It looks great. I can't wait.

  49. Starry night with the matte coat makes it look like you little hubble telescope pictures on your fingernails. Loving it!

    ReplyDelete
  50. The matte top coat is already at sale on Amazon.com and on Essie's website

    ReplyDelete
  51. Love the colours you chose to mattify. They all look awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thanks so much for this post! I really liked several of the OPI mattes, and I already have the originals, so I'm looking forward to Essie's mattifier.

Starry Starry night is just gorgeous, btw. Great choice!

  55. I love how Matte About You looks like with Starry Night! I have had Matte About You over Essie's Chubby Cheeks since yesterday afternoon (I'm planning a post tomorrow on my blog!) and so far have managed to chip the polish in a couple places off my acrylic nails. It was bad on one nail, I had to redo it. I never have polish chip off my nails when I have acrylic overlay so I thought that was weird. But I like that it dries fast and you can immediately see the matte!

  56. YEs, very cool treatment! I love that it can cure your nails fastr! too bad you couldn't konad over it...well because the top oat would defeat the purpose! lol

    ReplyDelete
  57. I saw this and thought of you!!!

    http://nevertoomuchglitter.wordpress.com/2009/05/09/essie-starry-starry-night/

It doesn't quite look like SSN to me, but who knows...

lol Have you ever mixed up your polishes or is it a polish sin lol?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh..and another thing.. lol

    Sephora brand blue sapphire....

perhaps if we put a little more.. super fine, silver glitter... it would look *more* like essie SSN?

I feel like sephora's 'dupe' is lacking in the glitter department... it has.. but... not enough? Especially when you compare the two bottles and essie's has sooo much more glitter visible.

Let me know what you think on this.. :-D

  59. Those colours look fab. I wonder how long it will be before this top coat arrives in the UK. x

  60. OMG!! I've been looking for matte nail polish ever sinds I ran out of mine years ago!! this is amaaaaazing!!

    xx

  61. WOW. You know, when the whole matte craze started I wasn't too convinced, but clearly I just hadn't seen a matte polish in the right color yet - Starry Starry Night looks AMAZING as a matte! I might have to get a bottle of this stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  62. where did you get this?!?!?!?!? omg..... i love the starry night....

    ReplyDelete
  63. I saw this today at Ulta, but held off on picking it off til a new coupon is released. I can't wait to buy one!

    ReplyDelete
  64. If you haven't already, try it over Greenport. It looks just like Wedgewood pottery.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I got this t/c at ulta when I got tired of waiting for them to get the new OPI mattes in. I am sooo frigging happy that I did. i wanted to get another one (i like to stock up on faves), but my local store had none, and while the manager checked to see when more were coming in, their shipping center was completely sold out. BOO ULTA!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thanks for the great shots of Essie Matte Finisher. You inspired me to buy it :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Do you know where I can get a hold of this stuff in Canada? I don't want to pay $10 shipping for a $10 product lol
