Nubar Matte Experiment

I mentioned on Twitter a while back that I tried a matte topcoat on top of a duochrome and it actually turned out cool. I didn't get a picture then, but I re-created it, and while I was mattifying things I thought I'd try it on a holo too.

Since I was using Nubar V For Men matte topcoat, I decided to use Nubar polishes (my original matte experiment was Nubar as well).

Nubar V For Men on Nubar Wildlife. As you can see, the duochrome effect remains even when mattified. The matte topcoat gives a very fascinating look to this particular duochrome. It looks like metal or stone with a coating on it... You know how when it rains, sometimes you get a rainbow oil slick in the puddles in parking lots? It's like dropping a rock in one of those puddles. Or maybe it's like fish scales. Either way, I've never seen anything like it and I think it looks pretty awesome. It's something you have to see in person to get the full effect.

Nubar V on Nubar Reclaim. This one didn't turn out as well. While the end result does look cool, like a speckled green matte, it completely destroys the holographic effect of the polish. Ruining a holo is a crime! But I suppose this makes sense- sometimes when applying holos I wonder why they look so matte and don't have a holographic effect, but then they dry and become shiny and the holo shimmer appears.

So far I like matte glitter the best, then matte shimmer and now matte duochrome. I'm going to do some more experiments, as well as doing a side-by-side comparison of all the mattes and matte topcoats once they're all released. There are a few more companies doing matte this fall so I'm going to wait until I think I have all of them to compare so I don't have to re-do it if I miss one.

I'll do a more in-depth post on Nubar V For Men soon, I just wanted to show you guys my experiment!

  5. The duochrome still looks fab. I am not surprised that the holo effect was ruined. I think someone did the same thing on the MUA nail board and got the same result. The shimmer or glitter in holo polish acts like the prism to break up light into its variously colored wavelengths. It needs to be able to reflect light to this.

  9. Ooh I like this - multipurpose polishes! Tried my first matte last week (Zoya Loredana) and really surprised myself with how much I loved it.

I bet that W&W Glitz from yesterday would look amazing with a matte topcoat.

  10. If there were a movie called "Invasion of the Giant Insects from Planet Mars", matte Wildlife would be the exact shade of their exoskeletons. Yeah, I would definitely wear that! :)

  11. Wow... those look cool... the ones I don't have =(

Reclaim actually looks... kinda cool like that. I was initially horrified that I destroyed DS Fantasy's holo-ness with V yesterday but I grew to like it. It's interesting in a way.

  13. Thanks for the post on this topcoat, I'm looking forward to the comparison post (although I will probably pick up Matte About You as soon as I can get my hands on it). I am so bummed that the matte holo didn't work, I think that would look so cool!!

  16. Looks really cool!

I have to get a matte topcoat, I don't want to buy a lot of matte polishes, so the topcoat is a great compromise. :)

  17. Cool! I love both duochrome and matte, so I'm definitely trying this - as soon as I get a matte topcoat!

Would be great to get comparison info on Nubar V and Essie MAY! I'm trying to figure out which one to get. :)

  18. Curious. I've been hearing raves over these matte colors and I must say I was skeptic at first. The photos you posted gives me a second thought. I'd try this when I find the perfect shade.

  20. I had a really wonderful matte topcoat a few years ago...you're making me want to find it or a good replacement, as I can't even remember the brand. (I only know it was so great, I bought some for my sister and mother.) I look forward to some kind of comparison so I can get the best! Thank you!
