Limited Edition Milani Color Play Felt-Tip Liquid Pen Eyeliner Swatches and Review

Milani has a special limited edition product out for summer- Color Play Felt-Tip Liquid Pens. They work great as waterproof liquid eyeliner pens, but you can also use them to create waterproof face and body art. There are six colors available:

Milani Color Play Felt-Tip Liquid Pen
Black Line, Blue Definition, Pink Point, Jaded Edge, Grey Strokes, White Line

Milani Color Play in Blue Definition as eyeliner

Milani Color Play in Grey Strokes as eyeliner

What I liked:
  • Inexpensive.
  • The felt tip is nice and thin with a sharp point, good for creating crisp lines.
  • Cool colors. You don't see pink eyeliner very often.
  • Some of the colors are opaque and don't require multiple coats (the white has surprisingly good coverage).
  • Waterproof and smudgeproof.
  • Quick dry time.
What I didn't like:
  • Some of the colors require multiple coats to become opaque.
  • When applying multiple coats, the formula has a tendency to ball up and get noticeably chunky/clumpy.
  • If too much product is applied, the line will flake.
  • The felt tip is unusually stiff and has very little give to it. It makes a sharp line but doesn't flex comfortably. Don't poke yourself.
  • I think the regular Eye Tech liquid pens are more opaque and easier to use compared to these.
  • They're limited edition and can be hard to find in stores.

Overall, good but not great. The black, grey and green are my favorites. The pink was the one I was looking forward to the most, but it's disappointingly sheer. I really like Milani's chubbier Eye Tech felt tip pens so I had high hopes for the Color Play pens, but they just weren't as opaque and smooth as I'd anticipated. I haven't tried these for face or body art, but I can see them working well for that purpose because of the sharp tip, wet texture and quick-dry waterproof formula.

These are limited edition but I haven't been able to find them in any store in my area. Luckily, they are available online via Milani's website, $6.99 for each 0.02 fl oz pen.

  1. You made me laugh, "Don't poke yourself." Definitely not for me then. I have issues with stabbing myself with my mascara all the time as it is.

  2. The matte finish on these are quite interesting but probably the reason why they are tough to use. Most liners are runny and have that glossy finish. This is like a matte gel liner in a pen form.

  3. I have the blue and the black, and I love these - they black has actually replaced the PF eye booster as my favorite black liquid eyeliner.

  4. I love the pink colour as well, it' s such a shame that it' s so sheer! :(

  6. I like these! These type of pen liners work well for me because I'm a total klutz with regular liquid liner.

  8. I have all of these, thanks to my local Fred Meyer, and I didn't find any of them to be that sheer but I haven't played with them that extensively, other than drawing on my hands and arms and trying a bit of eyeliner. Personally, I love them, and I'm a klutz with regular liquid liner so these are a bit easier for me.

  9. Are these indeed waterproof? Because I read on another blog that they aren't water resistant at all. Just curious :)

    1. They were for me! Wouldn't come off my eyes without soap or makeup remover and the swatches wouldn't come off my arm without scrubbing with soap.

  10. I like these, what a great price too. I'm still lemming for Illamasqua Havoc and Abyss though.

  12. The white one is satisfying my craving for an opaque white eyeliner as kindled by Illamasqua's version-- do you find them comparable at all? (just curious, since for something I use so infrequently I def. won't pay illamasqua's price tag!)

    1. Completely different texture, but the end result is basically the same. The Milani dries matte and the Illamasqua is a little shinier, but they're both non-shimmery white liquid liner... Go with the Milani :)
