Sephora By OPI Absinthe Makes The Heart

I admit, I haven't been the biggest fan of the Sephora by OPI line. I bought a ton of them when they were first released but not many since then. I don't care for the formula (it doesn't resemble OPI's consistently decent formula like I expected it to by having 'OPI' in the name) and I find the bottle design very unappealing. Though, every now and then they do release a color that really appeals to me, like this one did.

Sephora by OPI Absinthe Makes The Heart. First things first, what's up with the lazy name? I'm assuming it's a play on the phrase, "absence makes the heart grow fonder," except since the polish is green, they've used the word Absinthe. I'm sure Absinthe can make the heart grow just as fond, if not more so, but now I'm getting off topic. The name. Absinthe Makes The Heart. It makes the heart what? Or does it actually make a literal heart? Maybe they ran out of space on the label, but of other brands can fit names like Right Here Now, No More Later or Hot Ring Illusion Around Saturn onto a label, I don't see why Sephora by OPI can't.

The color itself is rather interesting. When I first got it, I was disappointed with it. It looked so dusty and dull and I wanted it to be greener. I wore it for a day and then put it in a drawer and forgot about it. Then, the other day, I was looking in m stash for fall colors to wear and this jumped out at me. It's better than I remember it.

It's a sheer, smoky grey base with a greenish tint. Within the sheer base are a variety of different shimmer and glitter particles. The most abundant is a very fine gold foil shimmer. There's some small blue-green glitter. Some dusty green shimmer. Coppery red microglitter. Silvery green foil shimmer. Looking at it close up, I don't see how the polish can look so green. I see mainly gold and grey, but somehow that green glitter reflects onto the gold and gives it a green hue.

As for the formula? It's sheer and watery- I needed four coats. Drying time isn't so good, especially not at four coats. Never been a fan of this formula, wish it was more like OPI's regular formula.

Very strange. Still a little too dusty looking, but not as bad as I remembered it. Very nice for fall.

  1. Lol, you are totally echoing my thoughts about the name as well! I saw this one at Sephora over the weekend and I just couldn't get past that darn name >_<

  2. Reminds me of a greener version of Graphite with an OPI DS finish. Never tried one of these polishes... Thanks for the review!
Any success in creating a dupe for Graphite? Did you try out the combination of polishes I suggested? I actually caved in and ended up getting all three of them. Started off with Peridot, then fell in love with Graphite and Quartz (just posted pictures on my blog). Quartz really surprised me. I thought I was going to hate it but I love it.

  3. Absinthe the drink is a much brighter green, acidic actually. But after you've louched it (added the water) it's a milky green. I love absinthe, to drink that is, and the use of the word absinthe as soon as anything has a toch of green is quite tiresome. By the way, absinthe comes in white as well. Tastes even better. (And no - you don't drink it in its original 72% alcohol form, or light it on fire. You add icecold water drop by drop, about 1 part absinthe, 5 parts water. Tastes like liqourice. Yummy!)

  4. I am the same as you with regard to having bought a lot of OPI for Sephora when they first came out - then being disappointing and the shades not that interestingly different from other lines at that time, I stopped finding things I "Had to have" in that line - then stopped looking and keeping up even.

  5. I think the name is a play on the saying "absence makes the heart grow fonder". Not sure what else it could be! :S I feel the same way about SOPI, although the have some amazing colours, the formula isnt what you'd expect at all.

  6. I love this color but I would put a black polish under this beauty so I would't need four coats

  7. I agree with you, the bottle design is ABSOLUTELY unappealing. I can even say that I hate it with passion... One of the reason why I've never bought any from this brand. Also, it's more expensive than the regular OPI bottles and seriously, I'm not attracted at all.

I don't like the color so much, too dusty for my taste. It just looks very mediocre.

Glad you like it though, I'm always so pissed when I'm excited to buy a color and then become disappointed by the application. Makes me unhappy!

  8. I remember seeing this at Sephora and almost getting it, but then putting it back. Seeing your photos is making me regret that decision!

  9. Love the color. I don't mind 4 coats if it looks this good.

  10. My brain kept reading the absent "grow fonder" part so I didn't even see that it didn't say that until you pointed it out lol. It's a nice polish but not something I'd be going out of my way to get.
I only own two SOPI's. One is in my top 5-10 polishes of all time though that doesn't have as much to do with formula as the fact that it's just a freaking cool polish.

  11. Jennifer, I still think it's too dusty, heh. But... not as bad as I remembered it. Wonder if it's gotten better with age, or if my memory is just crap?

Meeka, Which one?? Now I wanna know! :D

  12. Cool color! And I don't really like the bottle either. My roomies saw it yesterday and said it looked a bit.. vulgar :P

  13. I love the colour, a friend was just recently telling me how he loves the line "Absinthe Makes the Heart Grow Fonder" and that is was a quote from Dorian Gray :)
