A polish I really like - China Glaze Afterglow

China Glaze Afterglow. I found this polish in my stash a couple weeks ago. I was moving all my China Glazes into an Ikea Helmer, attempting to sort them vaguely by color. That's when I saw it. I didn't even know I had this. I don't think I've ever worn it. It's a shame, cause it's SO FREAKIN' COOL! It's a sheer polish with a milky nude-peach-yellowy pink base, which throws you off because it looks kinda funky. But the funny base isn't what shows up on your nail- it's the wicked blue iridescence! It has both a bright blue flash and bright blue shimmer particles. It looks electric. I can't stop looking at it. I think it would be amazing for layering over other colors, but I kinda like how this looks all by itself. This is three coats. I think one of the reasons I'm so drawn to this is that it reminds me of a polish I had in junior high. It was from Afterthoughts, remember that place? They sold cheap jewelry and did crappy ear piercing? Anyway, the name of the polish was Angel. Angel looked a bit like this (and a lot of other polishes, white with blue iridescence seems to be a popular theme).

So, there you go. China Glaze Afterglow. Cool polish.

You know... I really like doing random posts like this. I haven't had much time to sit and do 'real' reviews of collections lately (despite the fact that I have months worth of crap to post! Oy) and it really has me thinking.... Random posts are fun. Reviews feel like work, unless it's something I'm super-super excited about, and then it's fun.

And speaking of reviews, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do my full Nubar Prism review soon, as I STILL haven't seen the polishes in sunlight. It's been... what... a week? That's Chicago winter for you. I really wanted to see how much they sparkle in real sunlight and get some better pictures. I may just have to review them with my initial impressions. Hopefully I'll get a little sunlight before they come out and I won't have to do that.

I think that's all I wanted to say... I feel like I'm forgetting something. I don't know. *dodges avalanche of green slime*

If I don't get another chance to post before then, I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas! I know I will, I'm making rum cake.

  1. I saw this the other day - I think it might have been in my ULTA or either my Sally's - both have been restocking random China Glaze they never had before! As I hadn't seen it swatched and wasn't sure about it, I passed. Haha, you can bet and believe I'll be going back for it now, THAT IS FREAKING COOL!
    And happy holidays!

  3. You can't do that on television!!! Great reference. That was THE show in Canada when I was a kid in the early eighties.

I love these opalescent colours too, they are so much more than the average pretty shade. They are beauty and brains, which are interesting.

  4. I had a nail polish like this when I was younger and it was one of my favorites! I can't remember what brand it was. I wonder if I still have it.

I have been reading your blog for awhile and never knew you are in Chicago! Guess I must have missed that. I'm from Chicago too. :)

  5. Afterglow reminds me of a polish I had in the early 1990's -I think it was a Maybelline. I have no idea what it was called. Your slime comment cracked me up. You Can't Do That on a Nail Polish Blog!

  7. hmmm.... they seem to have a different shade of CG Afterglow on the transdesign website. it seems to be a mushroom/brown-cream shimmer color. They call it Afterglow #624. have they modified the polish? Pity. I would have liked to order it :(

  10. I too am reminded of a nail polish I had in high school! A similar shade of polish was attached to a prom dress I bought (some gimmick by Jessica McClintock) and it quickly became my favorite shade! I wonder what happened to it...

  12. Totally off topic, but I don't have IRL nail polish friends who would get this.

I saw a couple of Weimaraners out on squirrel patrol while on my walk yesterday. And I thought "Weimaraner" would make an excellent name for a taupey/greyish/mushroomy nail color. Maybe with a bit of shimmer, so you can get that lighter greyish color they have on the very edges of their ears as you move your hands in the sunlight.

  18. Wow thats beautiful! I love having polishes like that simply for layering purposes. My nails are too stained for sheer polish...

  19. Nice shade! Oddly enough, Revlon had a very similar shade of the name that they released in the 70's (when I was in HS...gah, I'm tellin' on myself). It was the very first irridescent polish I ever saw, and I wore often.

I may have to hunt this down for nostalgia's sake and play Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album while doin' a mani...

  21. I had a np from Afterthoughts I still REALLY wish I had. It was called Greased Lightning and I THINK it looked just like Misa Street Style. Unfortunately I can't find this one either :( I am haunted by this np! I also remember having a np with chunky purple glitter from there.

  22. Did you know Afterthoughts was a sister company to Claire's and later turned in to the Icing? Yeah, I worked for them lol.

  23. When you get the OPI Hong Kong collection, I would love to see what Afterglow looks like layed over Jade is the New Black. I like the idea of a shiny jade colour.

  28. I think I have an ancient WnW that's a near dupe of this one. Still proof that I need (stop crying wallet!) to shlep down to the walgreens with the good CG selection.
I remember my old mall used to have an Afterthoughts and a Claires. I'm surprised that the same company would put two so similar stores in one small mall.
Glad you enjoyed the post! Your taste is similar to mine so I tend to enjoy yout NOTD's etc more than collections just because there are more colors I like.

  32. Very cool... tho I think I'm even more scared that I remember Afterthoughts as a store... and that YOU can even recall the name of the polish you think it matched! I never bought any polish there.. most of mine was early 90's Bath & Body works... when they started to have holiday related glitter. Love that CG tho!
