Color Club Take Wing Collection Summer 2012 Swatches and Review

Color Club's Summer 2012 Take Wing collection is summery, sparkly and 100% awesome. Each polish in the collection is a combination of iridescent, flashy glass fleck shimmer and bright, vibrant color. The colors are:

Daisy Does It - Sparkle and Soar - Fly With Me - Metamorphosis - Sky High - Wing Fling

Color Club Daisy Does It. This has a sheer, warm yellow base with iridescent yellow, gold and green/blue duochrome glass fleck shimmer. The green doesn't come across very well in my picture, but it's visible from every angle in real life. Similar to Kat Von D High Voltage Nail Lacquer in Sparklehorse / The Painted Nail Mestiza.

Color Club Sparkle and Soar. A warm tangerine base with orange shimmer, yellow-green duochrome shimmer, and heavy gold metallic shimmer. The large, opaque bright gold pieces give this a bit of a speckled look, but also create a glimmering gilded look to the polish. The color is so bright and cheerful and the duochrome and iridescent shimmer particles are constantly shifting and sparkling, it's extremely fascinating to look at when it's on your nails, like smoldering embers. Reminds me of The Painted Nail Citrus Sparkle.

Color Club Fly With Me. A sheer, leafy green base with gold, light green and darker blue/green duochrome shimmer. Very bright and fresh with little glints of orange highlight here and there. Similar to The Painted Nail Fairy Wings.

Color Club Metamorphosis. A sheer teal base with bright metallic blue shimmer and teal/purple/pink/gold multichrome shimmer. This one has a lot of multichrome color shift visible in the bottle, but it doesn't translate onto the nail. There is some slight green/blue/purple shift, but nowhere near as dramatic as it is in the bottle. Still a very rich, sparkly and pretty color, even without the strong duochrome effect. Reminds me of a less-duochrome version of Nicole Iceberg Lotus.

Color Club Sky High. A sheer blue base with aqua, metallic silvery-blue and purple/gold duochrome shimmer. Like Metamorphosis, this has a very strong duochrome look in the bottle, but once it's on the nail, it's nearly invisible. Little glints of purple here and there, but nothing major. The finish on this one is smoother than the rest of the shades since the particles are smaller- it's somewhere in between glass fleck and foil. This is similar to Kat Von D Mad Max / The Painted Nail Electric Blue.

Color Club Wing Fling. Wing Fling is a bright and saturated magenta jelly base with pink/purple/yellow duochrome shimmer and metallic silvery-pink shimmer. This one has lots of depth to it and is very glowy from the combination of deep, saturated base color and lighter, slightly warmer-toned shimmer.

The formula on these was perfect in texture, but a little bit sheer. Each shade was smooth and easy to apply, no running or pooling, no ridges or clumps due to thickness. I did three coats of each and they're not 100% opaque at three, but they looked good enough that I didn't feel the need for a fourth coat. Dry time is nice and fast. These dry rather dull, so a nice shiny topcoat is a must.

I love all the shades even if they do seem like dupes of existing colors. One, because you can never have too many brightly colored duochrome glass fleck polishes, and two, because these are less expensive than the colors that they're imitating. A mini-sized bottle of Kat Von D High Voltage Nail Lacquer? $12. Color Club? Full sized bottle for $3. Sure, I would have liked to see a brand new collection of unique colors, but these still rock even if they are similar to colors I already own.

The Color Club Take Wing collection is available now.

  2. Metamorphosis actually IS a dupe for Nicole by OPI Iceberg Lotus... and Sky High is a dupe for Nicole's "You're S-Teal the One"! They're both gorgeous colors!!!

    1. Is it actually a dupe, or just similar? I haven't compared them side by side, but Iceberg Lotus looks so much prettier to me when I'm wearing it. I loooooove Iceberg Lotus!

    2. I'm NOT advertising or spamming! but I have comparisons of Metamorphosis and Sky High (and Sparkle and Soar) on my blog (http seen through my profile)... I loved those first two so much that I didn't even realize that I had dupes!!! They were identical, down to the duochrome effect. Color Club has a MUCH better formula though!

    3. Sweet! I'll go check it out. So weird, must be my imagination, haha!

  3. Thanks so much for swatching these! I wasn't as intrigued by the bottle shots alone, as they looked a bit more frosted than I prefer, but on the nail it really is more of a nice, metallic shimmer. I'll definitely be on the lookout!

  5. I probably have dupes for almost all of these, but I'm still tempted to grab them when I walk by at my Rite Aid :) How does Daisy Does It compare to China Glaze's Lighthouse? (I opened both your swatches up in separate tabs like a loser and they looked really similar in photos but I'd like to know your opinion from them in real life).

    1. You know, I *always* forget about Lighthouse. Always! Which is weird, because I loved it when it came out and I wore it at least three times since then... But now I can't remember! Will have to see if I have it here and hold them side by side!

  7. I <3 affordable dupes! Thanks for the swatches! I'm curious about how Daisy Does It compares to China Glaze Lighthouse, as well; it was the first color I thought of when I saw that bright sparkly yellow.

    1. Thank you :) I can't remember at the moment, I will have to find my bottle and compare. I sorta remember Lighthouse having a rounder-shaped sparkle and not having as much green in it.

  8. After your Zoya swatches yesterday, I found myself craving a "juicy" looking polish, so this evening at CVS I picked up Spoiled Vitamin C, which looks very similar if not a dupe, to the orange one here Sparkle and Soar. I've never been one for orange polish, but something about it called to me and I'm really enjoying it! It has shimmery glass flecks and that "golden" shine to it. :)

    1. I'll have to look for that one! I adore orange polishes, especially they have golden shine :)

  11. I only bought 2 from this collection.. but now you make me want them all. They look so amazing.

  12. Did you wear Metamorphosis when weather was really bad? I saw a very strong duochrome effect then (especially light blue <3)

    1. I'm going to have to wear it again. I adore Nicole Iceberg Lotus, so maybe I just didn't look at Metamorphosis in the right light!

  13. I just put on Sparkle and Soar and then I saw this! Funny coincidence! S&S is the only one I bought from this collection but I am tempted to get more.

  16. What is the last bottle? A special top coat? I'm always on the look out for good top coats.

    1. Yep, it's a topcoat, Color Club 0-60 Speed Dry Topcoat specifically, but... It's not good XD Takes forever to dry and it smells bad. Color Club's Vivid 10 topcoat is much better.

  17. I seen these yesterday at Meijer for 3.99 a bottle, in a large display hanging on the shelves. (not the small butterfly shaped ones like at rite aid. This held about 50 of these)

    1. I saw them at Meijer too, I was surprised! Usually they only have the Massini / Studio M version of the collection, but these were in the Color Club bottles and there was a full display of Color Club Magnetic Force right underneath, how amazing!

  18. The first two reminded me of Misa's Under My Sunbrella and Endless Keys, except for these seem more opaque to me. Still, pretty collection :)

  19. I was at Claire's the other day and they have what I think is this exact collection in different bottles. I looked at the back and they are made by color club. Worth looking into for ppl like me that cannot buy color club in a store. Oh and they were buy one get one half off.

  20. They're all gorgeous! Thanks for the swatches. Someone mentioned Spoiled polishes -- I've given up buying those because the brushes are so freakin' huge and shaggy. How are the Color Club brushes? thx

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have a couple of the Spoiled glitters and I agree about the brushes!

Color Club brushes are great. They're round and thin. Thicker than Essie's brush, but just a touch smaller than Zoya's. The bristles are a good density and are almost always flawless :)

  21. Yea I bought the Claire's equivalent to these. I must say these are amazing!

  22. Wasn't planning on getting these, but as always, your swatches sold me!

  23. Even though I've already seen these colors like 20 different times from different brands, I still love them all haha! I can't wait to get my hands on these colors!

  24. I am wondering how Sparkle and Soar compares to Zoya Tanzy. They look quite similar but I am not sure if they are dupes or not.

  25. Hi! Could you please do a comparison of Daisy Does It and Kat Von D's Sparklehorse? I've been wanting it and I'm hoping this will satisfy me.

  26. I'm just discovering Color Club - must add these to my list, esp. Sparkle and Soar. Can I ask, what base coat works best with Color Club? I've been using Zoya Anchor and I'm getting more tip wear and chipping than I'd expect, and I don't think the problem is with the polish. Any advice would be great! [I think this is going to show as "Anonymous" but I'm really (blogless) Diana].

  27. Hi,
I bought last summer L'Oreals with the same finish, but they were pretty sheer. Are these better?
    Thanks! I love this finish!

  28. I'm really liking what I am seeing of this collection online.

  29. Chiming in that I also compared Metamorphosis and Iceberg Lotus and found them to be dupes! The only tiny difference I saw was that Metamorphosis is slightly more dense, and so the duochrome seemed to show a tiny bit less (to me in person, but in the photos I took any difference didn't really show at all!) Iceberg is one of my favourite polishes so I didn't mind (although I already had backups of Iceberg, lol)!

I also got only two of these and your pics are making me want the rest, even though I know I have dupes of most of them (You're S-teal the one, and I think the orange/lime look a lot like the Misa ones from last year...)! :)

  36. Just here to confirm that this collection is stil in Claire's, except called the Starstruck Collection. Metamorphosis is now Drops of Jupiter, and Sparkle and Soar is now Little Dipper. Those are the only two I got, so I don't know the other names, but all of them were at the Claire's I went to. Still BOGO 1/2 off. The only one I don't remember seeing is Daisy Does It, but the rest were there for sure.
