OPI Nicki Minaj Collection Spring 2012 Swatches and Review

Here's another little spring mini-collection from OPI. I'm beginning to wonder if they're doing these pop star/celebrity collections from now on instead of the little mini Valentine's Day collections they used to do (like the e-Romance collection, remember that one?). Last year this time was the Katy Perry collection. Now we have a collection for Nicki Minaj.

OPI Did It On 'Em. This one reminds me of OPI Who The Shrek Are You? from spring 2010. It's a bright spring green creme. Very fun/funky type of color. But I don't quite understand the name... It sounds kinda... wrong. Makes me think of that one Mighty Boosh song (language may not be safe for work!).

OPI Fly. This one is one of those bright blue-teals that never look quite right in pictures. It's definitely brighter and more teal-colored in real life, not this duller, bluer looking color my camera picks it up as.

OPI Metallic For Life. This is a black base with multiple sizes of silver glitter. This was thicker, chunkier, and harder to apply than the other colors in the collection.

OPI Pink Friday. A very bubblegum-candy-Pepto Bismol type of light pink. It's a little bit dirty looking and has a little more pink than most to keep it from being too bright or too pastel. It has a very creamy finish- extremely dense looking.

OPI Save Me. This one is a small silver glitter mixed with medium blue and holographic bar glitters. Clear base. It's a little dense for layering- the glitter covers most of the base polish. Looks good over black, though. I like it best alone.

The set also comes with a new shade of OPI Shatter crackle topcoat- Super Bass Shatter. It's a deep purple shimmer that looks like a different color on the nail than it does in the bottle. It's quite pretty, actually:

OPI Super Bass Shatter over Did It On 'Em.

The formula on the cremes was perfection. The formula on the glitters was not as good. The cremes were smooth and opaque, zero trouble with application. The two glitter shades were thick, chunky and slightly stringy feeling. They would benefit from a little polish thinner to loosen the formula and give them a smoother application. I did two coats of each- they didn't need any more than that. Drying time on these was excellent, even on the thicker glitter shades. The glitters and the Super Bass Shatter dry very textured, so you'll need at least two coats of a thick topcoat if you want it to be glass-smooth. A third over the Shatter would be even better.

I'm not actually familiar enough with Nicki Minaj or her music to know if these are really true "Nicki Minaj" colors, but I have seen pictures of her... For someone with such amazingly out-there, fun, colorful and outrageous outfits, I kinda expected more creative or wild colors in a collection named after her. I mean, just Google "Nicki Minaj"- her makeup and outfits and hair are awesome. Although... The colors in this collection do actually match this outfit she wore here, maybe that's where the inspiration came from:

I do really like how Super Bass Shatter looks over the colors. The rich purple sparkles were a surprise and I think they look especially good over Fly. Fly is my favorite one of the collection. Save Me is also really interesting and definitely worth a look if you are in the market for some bar glitter.

This collection is available now! There is also a mini set that has Pink Friday, Did It On Em, Fly and Metallic For Life, in case you wanted to try some but didn't want full bottles.

    1. Haha :) I like it, but it looks so much like a color OPI has already done!

  2. Fly is definitely the must-get shade for me from this collection. The colour is just so pretty and in-your-face + stand out from the crowd, haha!

    1. I agree with that! That was the stand-out shade for me, too.

  3. I do think most of the colors are very Nicki with the exception of Pink Friday. It's way too light/almost pastel. I was expecting something brighter - Barbie pink. After all she does call her fans her "Barbies". Of all of them, I only picked up Save Me. Bar glitters are almost entirely absent from my collection.

  4. The only one I got was Save Me. I really like it.

  5. Your assumption about the green color is true. The song it is from is king of vulgar.

    1. Yes, "Did It On 'Em" is one of NM's songs, and it's so disgustingly offensive that my retinas are still burning from looking up the lyrics. LOL

I think the colors are nice except for the chartreuse and the shatter.

  6. Unos colores muy llamativos, como los que lleva Nicki.

  7. I think I'll get Fly and Save Me. I'm tempted with the Shatter, but I've got so many crackle/shatters from other brands of the same color.

  9. Haha, that first photo of Nicki made me laugh! :P

As for this collection, I like how it's bright and cheerful, but the only one that has been calling out to me (for a while now) is Save Me!

Awesome swatches and a superb review again, Scrangie! Thank you!

Hope your Friday is going well so far!

  10. This is my favorite collection this year! I have pink Friday on with Superbass shatter! I LOVE IT! I CANNOT wait for OPI holland. Seems like all my money is solely going to OPI this spring. :)

  11. I was really disappointed with this collection! The original press release had the pink looking almost holo, which would have been cool.
I got Super Bass Shatter, Metallic 4 Life and Save Me. Save Me would have been better with more bar glitter that was slightly thinner (similar to those in the Wet n Wild winter collection) and wayyy less silver microglitter. Super Bass Shatter is awesome, and haven't used Metallic 4 Life yet.
OPI did a lot better with the Katy Perry collection, I feel - a duochrome, glitters, shatter.

    1. I remember that. The bottle pic for Pink Friday was a pink holo. I know holo pigments are costly, but come on! Lots of foreign brands are able to do the holo. OPI is missing out on their piece of the action. Everybody is buying Hits and Glitter Gal to get those awesome holos!

  12. And don't get me wrong - I love me some Nicki Minaj! This just falls flat for her.

PS Scrangie -- my Scrangie from RBL arrived today, can't wait to try it!! It looks amazing. I thought you should know LOL

  14. I really want Metallic 4 Life and Pink Friday, probably some others too. I'm not so sure. I keep going back and forth about the ones I want and don't want!

  15. I don't really like any of them, but YAY for the Mighty Boosh reference!

  16. Fly and Metallic For Life look best to me, and Super Bass is definitely an interesting shade. Thanks for the great swatches!

  17. Scrangie, all the names are a play on her songs- Did it On Em' is actually a song, Metallic for Life (Moment 4 Life), Fly is actually called Fly... and so on. Did It on Em is like saying if we faced off, I did something so amazing you wouldn't have a comeback- it's not necessarily a gross connotation. think the collection although some may think is boring is actually really representative of her- pops of bright color, glitter, and the combinations that you could make definitely represent her out of this world personality. Super Bass shatter is amazing as well! I couldn't wait to get it, because I am such a fan. I wish I had bought the MAC Pink Friday lipstick- just for the name, lol! Great swatches, as always!

The endless combinations, that could be made from these colors, are definitely worthwhile, and representative of her out of space persona :o) I couldn't wait to get it, because I am such a fan, I wish I had bought the MAC Pink Friday lipstick- just for the name, lol! 19. Scrangie.. Love your swatches :) I think I have dud bottles for me Pink Friday was a bit tricky to apply - it took me 3 coats and the brush kept stiffing up and dragging - something I havent ever experienced with an OPI. My polishes from this collection seem to be the total opposite from yours Save Me and Metallic for life applied like a dream! Not at all chunky - very easy to pop on and only needed 2 coats for perfection. I dont know whether it was just the batch I got?? I hope people arent put off by the formula - for me the formula overall was great. I was very surprised by Fly, when I was applying it I thought it was freaking out and turning Jelly on me. Then I whacked the second coat on and it turned into amazement! But both my Pink Friday and Fly look much more saturated then they do in photos - even I photographed my nails to make sure I hadnt got a fake or dud batch - and its just the pics, strange how they look so different in photos - well not so different just a slight shade different. Pink Friday reminds me of bubblegum and barbie - save me and metallic for life are my absolute faves I think shatter is over done and needs to be dead and buried and put to rest once and for all! Hmmpfh no offence to all who love shatter!

Love the review and swatches as always - cant wait to see the new Nicole by OPIs :)

    Lots of Love!! x

  20. I only got Save Me from this collection and I love it. I have a teal similar to Fly and tried Save me in an accent nail, very pretty, not sure about Save Me for a complete mani, too much for me!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I did get the shrek color green, teal, and pink.I cannot wait on the Holland set to drop. You're on to something with OPI and female pop stars, Wishing they had MORE edgy colors.

    ReplyDelete
  22. With most glitters I do a base coat similar to the base coat of the glitter that way the removal is not so difficult. I am currently wearing Metallic for Life over Essie Licorice, a creme black and I love it! Yes the glitter is chunky, but one or two coats over black and it comes out just as beautiful. Don't own a color like it!

  23. I think they really missed the boat here with that pink - why not a neon?

    ReplyDelete
  24. OPI actually messed up the mini collection it's labeled as having Metallic 4 Life but actually has a bottle of Save Me in it's place.

I did a light layer of Save Me over Did It On Em and it looked like confetti and streamers falling :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Really don't know any of her music. These polishes are fine. Nothing jumps out at me that I want. Like the glitters but I have a ton of glitters.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Really surprised to see you mention this Mighty boosh! Didn't know that it had made it over to the states. Love the mighty boosh, such surreal nonsense. P.s this collection doesn't grab me, half of them colours I couldn't pull off.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think they just put these out at my Ulta but I didn't stop to look (not really interested in any of them). I would consider getting Save Me. The Super Bass/Fly combo looks really nice.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Um, can I just say that you are even more my favorite now that you've referenced the BOOSH in a blog post about nail polish? Be still my heart :)

  29. Lovely pictures as always! You are right that the pink looks dirty in person. I was going to pick it up but passed.

  30. I entered the OPI Nicki Minaj nail art contest on facebook to try to win these. I really wanted to win. :( Maybe I'll pick up the set of minis. I love that Mighty Boosh song. I want that to be my ringtone.

  31. I agree that the colors aren't super exciting but I'm kind of obsessed w/ Nicki Minaj so I picked up the entire collection, ha.

  32. I love how the names are so alike to her songs! I am loving this collection very much!!! Just might pick up all of them!!!

  33. These are so lovely! Thanks for swatches.

  34. yeah, the song is called did it on 'em, but those are not the uncensored lyrics to the hook, haha. it is a gross phrase, but it's a badass song.

i picked up the whole collection (in the mail coming to me right now!) - i think she's freakin' genius and hilarious.

thanks for the review! glad that the quality is good so i won't have buyer's remorse!

i got the whole collection (in the mail right now!!); i think nicki is hilarious and genius. most consistently clever rhymes i've heard from a mainstream rapper in a long time!

thanks for the review - i'm glad the quality is good! i was worried i'd have buyer's remorse, haha!

  36. Massive love for Metallic For Life, I wish OPI wasn't so darn expensive though!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I got Fly, Pink Friday, Metallic 4 Life and Super Bass as a gift. I like the colors I got but I agree that they could've been more exciting. I hope that if they do another celebrity nail collection they have some better options. I definitely liked Katy's collection more. I wish they would do a Valentine's Day collection again.

    ReplyDelete
  38. They aren't that exciting, but they are very Nicki. Her teal eyeshadow, greens, her sparkley leather, and obviously Pink. Very Nicki. I got my hands on these a little early, but I only went for Fly. How would you compare Pink Friday to Sparrow Me the Drama? I feel like they're the same color...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wow, these look fabulous, I have to say I wasn't really expecting to like these but your swatches have convinced me, as always. :))
First time commenter but long time follower. :)

I think I like the purple shatter over Metallic For Life and Pink Friday best.

  40. Love all of the colors, can't wait mine to arrive :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree that they could have done more with this collection. Nicki Minaj is probably one of the most outrageous celebrities out there right now, and these colors are just kind-of normal... they really should have gone more edgy/wild with them. That being said, some of them are still really pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love these colors...particularly Fly & Metallic for Life. They look amazing ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Really disliked Metallic 4 Life. The base being a watery black dictates few shades you can wear under it. It is really chunky like you said and did not apply well. Also, something odd in the glitter makes the silver glitter look like a sterling necklace I left sitting out for months and it's oxidized. Just not a good polish at all in my book. The green was not for me. Fly pretty but I probably would only wear it a few times. The 'other' glitter is stringy and hard to deal with - but on a shimmer white looked pretty when I got it on - but ugh -one of the worst ever glitters to take off. All in all it seems like Sephora could have done without this collection.

  44. I didn't know what a 'Nicky Minaj' was, but I now need "Did It On 'Em" because you have inextricably linked it forever to the Boosh and one of the best comedy songs ever :P

  46. And just when I thought you were as cool as anyone could be...you pop out a Boosh reference! Awesome post.

  47. Sadly, I like the colours, but after reading the lyrics from the song I just won't be buying any of them. Can't believe OPI would align themselves with such awfulness. Went straight to the Pirates of the Caribbean set and bought Mermaid Tears, Skull and Glossbones and Sparrow me the Drama instead. And as if i'm not suggestible enough I'll be watching The Mighty Boosh series one tonight!
