Maybelline Color Show Limited Edtion Fall 2012 Nail Lacquer Collection Swatches and Review

Just spotted this cool new collection of Maybelline Color Show nail polishes. They have their own display apart from the regular Color Show display and according to their labels, they're all limited edition. The Maybelline Color Show Fall 2012 Limited Edition colors are:

Maybelline Color Show in 700 Avante Green. Green-blue-gold multichrome with metallic chrome finish. Looks like China Glaze Unpredictable to me.

Maybelline Color Show in 705 Auburn Ablaze. Brown base with red and burgundy shimmer. Has a slight purple tone to it at some angles, but looks mostly brown with cool red shimmer on my nails.

Maybelline Color Show in 710 Metal Icon. A medium silver-grey multicolor/rainbow shimmer. There's a lot of different colors in here, but they're subtle. It looks mostly like a grey base with chunky silver shimmer. It's not a Chanel Graphite dupe, but it's similar.

Maybelline Color Show in 715 Boho Gold. Warm gold, olive, yellow-green and blue multichrome with metallic chrome finish. Not a dupe of Chanel Péridot, but pretty close to Deborah Lippmann Swagga Like Us.

Maybelline Color Show in 720 Pink Cosmo. Light pink, lavender, gold and green multichrome with metallic chrome finish. Similar to a lot of the recent pink/gold/green duochromes (Nails Inc. Stratford, Deborah Lippmann Sugar Daddy, China Glaze Swanky Silk, etc.), but lighter and slightly cooler-toned.

Maybelline Color Show in 725 Downtown Brown. Warm, very red-toned brown base with teal-green blue duochrome shimmer. Similar to Urban Decay Bruise / Misa Embroidered Emerald. Basically it's MAC Club eyeshadow in nail polish form.

The formula on these was good but very thin. All the shades were equally thin and very sheer- I needed four coats of each to achieve full opacity and that's what I'm wearing in these pictures. The only actual problem I encountered in application was that a few of the brushes were defective; one had bristles sticking out, one was cut at an angle and one was flared at the ends. Dry time was fast despite doing four coats.

This collection seems to be riding on the Chanel Graphite / Chanel Péridot chrome-finish multichrome/multicolor shimmer trend that's really big right now. I like how duochrome-heavy the collection is, but I already own the original versions of a lot of the colors so it's a bit redundant. However, these are pretty cheap (around $3 each), so they might be a good way to satisfy a lemming for one of the more expensive dupes without having to pay as much.

    1. Ahhh! You're so lucky to own Misa Embroidered Emerald! I've been trying to track it down for years to no avail.

But yes, Downtown Brown is amazing. I bought it not too long ago and wore it. Gorgeous and very special. Plus I love how it's very affordable, too.

  3. Do you happen to know when and where these will be launched? In Europe, too?

    1. I'm sorry, I'm not sure about Europe! I got mine at Walgreens here in the states, but I've seen them around at several other drug/grocery stores as well.

  4. I keep seeing blog with Downtown Brown and thought I missed it off the first big release display as it was pilfered fast and hard at my only place to buy drugstore things. Now I know it's in a different new display. We might not get them here - always hard to tell. I bought only 1 of the first Color Shows. Like you found it thin, watery and reminded me why I don't buy this brand anymore. I was in the Walgreens this past week (a 60 mile drive for me) and they had no Maybelline as I did look for any thinking I might see Downtown Brown...so maybe some areas just not getting this one? We don't get a lot of things other areas do despite we have the same chain stores. Ah - life in rural Am!

  5. I think I might want Downtown Brown...

Auburn Ablaze is really gorgeous, too..it reminds me of OPI Germany - Oktoberfest or Germanicure...not sure which one.

  7. It's great to see them doing interesting stuff at this price point again, even if a lot is dupe-y of other stuff. There was a run of collections in the recent past (end of Express Finish era) that were so very boring.

  10. YES! Thanks for the swatches. It's not a particularly unique collection, but I do like Avante Green better than the ChG; this one's greener. Downtown Brown actually looks kind of fascinating, but I can't decide if I really need it or if it's just an It color this fall that I won't be stoked about once the season's over. Ahh, but it is LE. I should probably get it for posterity's sake.

  12. These are $3.79 at our local CVS, and I picked up Downtown Brown and Metal Icon. Haven't swatched them yet. One thing to keep in mind is that the bottles are basically minis -- only 0.23 oz. That's OK with me but I think the bottle size compared to how much polish you actually get is a bit deceptive.

  13. Lovely swatches but nothing there that makes me desperately want to buy them. Maybe I'm spoilt...

  14. I think the only one I'd REALLY want is pink cosmo. Gorgeous swatches, as always :)

  20. FYI, the Metal Icon sold at a Fred Meyer near me is a definite brownish-bronzy color instead of gray/silver. I'm not sure if there are two different versions of them or if the batch I got is defective or something. It's still nice, but it's a very different color. I'll keep my eye out for the gray version.

I'm not sure if there are two versions of it (seems strange for a new color) or if the batch I got is defective or something. I'll keep my eye out for the gray version.

    1. Ooh, very strange, good to know! My bottle definitely goes on silvery, with some purple tone and large flecks of bronze, but mostly just grey with rainbow :(

  22. I LOVE your eye for color... I thought the exact same thing about Downtown Brown looking like Club & the Blue-Brown pigment. Love your blog :))) xoxo

  24. I got both Avante Green and Downtown Brown; I'm wearing the latter right now and love it. I actually only needed three coats of it, whereas my bottle of Avante Green seems way more sheer than yours. :/ I guess I'll see once I wear it for real.

  25. I love Boho Gold. It's great for stamping, so I might have to grab another.
