Beyond The Zone Color Jamz Pro Formula Hair Color in Bubble Head Pink

I know you all want to see nail stuff and not the side of my head, but I just finished my last bottle of this yesterday and it reminded me to write a review.  More of a warning than a review, really.

This product gets a special award from me because it's the worst hair color I've ever used.  I have pretty realistic expectations when it comes to beauty products, so it's rare that disappointed in anything as much as I was with this.

I bought it because it was on sale and already cheap (around $5).  I'm really happy with my usual color, but I could get two bottles of this for the same price as one jar of Manic Panic, and the color looked similar in the bottle, so I figured why not?

I have two good things to say about this.  One, the squeezy bottle packaging is convenient (except the texture of the color really thick and hard to squeeze out).  Two, it's a pretty color right out of the bottle.  Oh... And I guess it smells okay.  Maybe that's three.

Other than that it has no redeeming qualities for me.  Why?
  • It stains everything... except my hair.
  • Really, even leaving it on for five hours didn't make it stick to my hair.
  • It bleeds more than any color I've ever used.  Even when my hair is dry.  It gets on everything.
  • It dries my hair out really bad and makes it feel gross.
  • It only lasts one wash before any noticeable color it deposited on my hair fades drastically or disappears altogether.
I had already used one full bottle a few months ago and the second one I bought was just sitting in my cabinet taking up space, so I used the whole bottle to touch up my just-starting-to-fade ends.

Beyond the Zone Bubble Head Pink over Manic Panic Hot Hot Pink (Manic Panic Lie-Locks on bangs)

Really not much of a difference in color than before I applied it except that the parts that were starting to turn light pink are a little darker now.  The only real difference is that now my hair feels dry and my neck and back are stained hot pink.

I purchased mine from Sally Beauty

  1. Great review!
I am usually not much interested in beauty products other then nail polish but something in this post did pull in. And I am so happy I did!!!
Bleeding is maybe the worst thing of all in hair color and I am so happy to know I should beware of this one!
    Thank you!

  2. I know which one to avoid now! Sometimes you really do get what you pay for :/

  3. I'm sorry this sucked :( For the record, though, I am a reader who is ok with seeing the side of your head sometimes instead of nails. Or your eyeballs (makeup). Those are good, too.

  4. I fell into the trap of using that rubbish a couple of years ago. How they're still selling that crap is beyond me, it's the worst dye ever and I've used a lot of dyes!

  6. Thanks for the warning! I like these types of dyes to tint my hair without causing damage. Now I won't be tempted to try this cheaper brand.

  7. I've been disappointed in that brand as well. The first one I tried was Not So Shy Violet. The swatch on the shelf and the color in the bottle made it look like a lovely saturated blue color. When I applied it to my head, however, I was left with a nasty grayish blueish color, about the color of dishwater. It was *awful*. Several months later, I decided to give it a go again, this time in Outrageous Orange, because I wanted orange and that was the only one that Sally had at the time. I had the same issues with the orange as you did with the pink! Simply terrible :(

  9. OMG YOu MUUUUUUST try the Sallys Color Brilliance Ion Brights. Those have replaced Manic Panic for me and they wear SOO amazingly well and are SO VIBRANT. They dont have as wide of a range of colors, but they are very customizable. My violet is a blend of Three of their colors. They smell good and are WAY cheap! Like $4.49 a tube if you have a Sally's card thing. The only downside is that it is kinda pravana ish, in that it does not bleach out extremely easily. That said, I LOVE that stuff!! Gotta do my roots soon. I usually leave my on for about Two hours and my hair looks NEON afterwards. It's awesome.

    1. I use that brand and the formula really does smell amazing, haha! The only downside I can see to it is that the texture is so thick that I have trouble squeezing the last little bit out of the tube. The colors are insanely beautiful, though! I love their pastels-- they last longer than brights of other brands I've used!

  10. I also color my hair unnatural colors. I have tried Special Effects Cupcake Pink and that one really lasts a long time. Most people use Atomic Pink because it's the brightest and lasts the longest. I swear by Punky Colour because even if it bleeds it bleeds minimally and my color remains vibrant even if I wash my hair everyday. It is so pigmented I even have to dilute it with conditioner.

  12. BTZ dyes suck, I remember helping a friend dye her hair blue with this crap back in '05. The dye did not take at all, it was totally shocking to see that she went from platinum to a slight greenish tint as if she had gone swimming after sleeping with the dye in.

I personally prefer Special Effects but I wind up using Manic Panic more since I can just pick it up locally. Being super allergic to most hair dyes myself I don't mess around with trying many other brands.

  13. I actually really love the Color Jamz line - EXCEPT this color lmao. I think I've tried every one of them and they all work well except for this one, which is so weird.

  15. I just recently bought their blue color and I agree its awful! I've tried ION brights too but only left it on for 45 min will try 2 hours next time and see how that works :) manic panic is definetly the best guess that's why it costs more dangit lol

  16. A friend of mine tried to use the real of this to add streaks to her light blond hair. It didn't take, and we figured we'd done something wrong... I'm glad to know it probably want us, but the dye itself sucking.

  17. The worst hair dye I've ever tried was Stargazer Dawn. Its supposed to be orange, but my hair was pink afterwards.
When i had dark blue hair, i used manic panic Midnight..something. And my mom was so mad 'cause it stained everything. Our table had tiny marks of blue hair, our sink had tiny marks of blue hair, our bathtub was almost compleatly blue. And i was kinda blue-ish after i took a shower. It sucked, but DAMN i looked good!

  18. i love manic panic, i always come back to it but they need to make a nice blue black dye soon

  19. i am a hair stylist and i think i have used every unnatural haircolor product on earth. The true winners are Hot Topic RAW (no shit) and Special Effects, which is worth ordering online if you cant get it locally. The colors last a very long time and fade beautifully. Stargazer is seriously crappy, not worth the effort. Remember to always wear a shower cap after application to keep the heat near your head for better absorption, and if you have a bonnet dryer, 15 minutes under hot will help lock it in also.

  21. .....with your hair not the dye. Y'know we like all your posts, doesn't have to be nails!

  22. You were fooled into using BTZ? Well damn. I prefer Jerome Russell Punky Colours in Flamingo Pink (lasts nicely but can fade) and the best is Special Effects Atomic Pink. I hear almost entirely complaints about Manic Panic and I KNOW Hot Topic's RAW crap sucks. I have never met a dye so bad. Ion's Color Brilliance Brights also work wonders but its thick. It stays where you put it though, they can be thinned with conditioner (might make the color pastel though).

  23. Special Effects was my favorite WAAAAY back when I used to dye it... It was 4.95 a bottle back then if that gives you an idea how long ago that was lol. My favs were Blue Velvet, Lizard Green, and the orange one (Atomic Orange?) although I think I tried them all at one time or another. Sometimes four or five colors at once :) Very time intensive though

  24. GOSH that sucks! sallys needs to sell Adore!

  25. have you tried Ion Color Brilliance Brights Semi-Permanent Hair Color
I used the teal and by god I can't get it to wash out to save my life. I thought it would fade out in about a month maybe two like manic panic but no its a bit faded but still fairly strong and here after 3-4 months. Which would be great but if I wanted to have same color but I don't :)
It didn't really stain anything at all and removed from every thing but my hair with rubbing alcohol. It does bleed a bit the first day or so but probably wouldn't if you washed it a few times in the shower initially (but that drys out my hair so i avoid).

  26. I think this is one of those brands where the type of hair and its condition make a huge difference in turnout. It's not the best nor the brightest formula out there but I used it in the hottest pink and orange colors before in alternating streaks all over my head, and it came out beautifully, it just fades very fast. Currently using the party time pink for soft pink ombre ends. It looks almost purple in the bottle but it turns out a light pretty pink as expected. If you want long lasting bright color, dont.go.with Manic, its hardly stronger....try PRAVANA VIVIDS.

  27. I tried one of their purples and had similar results. The only way to go is Special Effects - my color always lasted for four solid weeks even though I used it over my natural blonde hair without any bleaching. I had to give it up because of staining - it would stain EVERYTHING - the couch, my clothing, the bathroom, bedding, etc. Now I am a L'Oreal Feria girl, but sometimes I really miss having Pimpin' Purple hair.

  28. If your color lasted a month before having to touch up, it did it's job. Semi permanent colors like these do not last long. I use color jams ALL the time and it does not dry my hair or feel nasty. Maybe your hair was dry from bleaching before coloring?

  29. If your color lasted a month before touch up, it did it's job. Semi permanents do not tend to last that long. I use color jamz all the time and it does not dry my hair. Maybe your hair was dry from bleaching before coloring. Btw, I think your color looks good in the pic.

    1. Except it didn't last a month. It lasted one wash. So, basically... two days.

  30. ugh i really hate this stuff i bought turquoise dye and my hair looks terrible! my hair is GREEN and i even bleached my hair before i dyed it! only certain pieces dyed good.

  31. I completely disagree. Here's why: I'm a ginger. Love my hair color. But I had always wanted t put a blue or red in my hair. So I went to Sally's, bought a bottle of Huckleberry Blue from color jamz. I didn't even bleach my hair. I did it underneath my bangs. I applied the dye underneath. Used gloves (idk why anyone would when doing hair in the first place) I then used foil. Folded it all in it. I then used a hair straightener holding it on for about 10 -15 secs. Then left it for 30 minutes. A little did get on my forehead but it washed right off. Didnt bleed for me either. I rinsed until the water ran clear. And it was a bright vibrant blue. And it lasted for about 5 montages before it really started to fade. I think it's an excellent product when used right. But. You know. To each his own. I recommend it

  32. It bleeds extremely bad! The only thing that turned out 'huckleberry blue' was my scalp - and it was not applied to it! It turned the bleached strips of my hair that were almost white, a more light greenish color, and I had left it on about 4 hours as well as using heat on it lime it recommends for a 'more intense, longer lasting color'. Psshht....waste of money and time. I had better luck with kool-aid Eben I was a kid!
