Deborah Lippmann Mirrored Chrome Nail Lacquer Collection for Summer 2012 Swatches and Review

Haven't seem chrome-finish polishes in a while, have we? I can't remember the last chrome collection that came out. These new Deborah Lippmann mirrored chrome polishes are a little different than the chromes of the past, especially since they have the added perk of being multichromes instead of single-color metallics.

Deborah Lippmann Mirrored Chrome Nail Lacquer in Private Dancer

Deborah Lippmann Private Dancer. This one is a shape-shifter for sure. In dim lighting, it's a deep yet bright blue-toned purple with a metallic, near-chrome finish. In daylight, it flashes between lighter red-toned purple and the darker blue-toned purple from before, but it also has green and gold duochrome. It looks completely different every time I look at it. I thought it was going to be fairly dark, a Cadbury purple color, but it's lighter on the nail than it looks in the bottle. Also, for once, it's named after a song I like. Tina Turner is bad ass.

Deborah Lippmann Mirrored Chrome Nail Lacquer in Sugar Daddy

Deborah Lippmann Sugar Daddy. This one was a surprise. I was expecting to like this the least because I thought it would be light and champagne-colored, but it's actually my favorite of the three. It has a warm champagne pink chrome base and some very strong green and gold duochrome. The finish is the closest to true chrome and the duochrome flash is intense. Makes me think of a sheerer, very toned-down version of Nubar Wildlife (gold/pink/green multichrome). I absolutely love this. It's the most unique of the three, and if any of these are worth $18, it's this one. Also, these polishes are usually named after songs, but I'm not sure which Sugar Daddy this is named after. My mind goes either to Tom Jones or Hedwig and the Angry Inch, so....

Deborah Lippmann Mirrored Chrome Nail Lacquer in Swagga Like Us

Deborah Lippmann Swagga Like Us. I thought this was going to be a Chanel Péridot dupe and I was starting to regret ordering it, but when it arrived, it turned out not to be, so I was relieved! This is a very warm golden chrome base with orange/gold, green, aqua and blue duochrome. It's warmer and has a different base color than Péridot, but otherwise they're similar duochrome-wise.

A cool tiger-striped pattern formed in my bottle while I was swatching. Thought it was neat.

I did a little side-by-side comparison to show the similarities between Swagga Like Us and Péridot:

Left to right (pinkie to index finger):
Deborah Lippmann Swagga Like Us (three coats)
Chanel Péridot (three coats)
Deborah Lippmann Swagga Like Us (three coats)
Chanel Péridot (three coats)

Not duplicates, but pretty similar. One's warmer than the other. Same duochrome colors.

The formula on these was good. Old-style chromes had a tendency to be really watery, but these didn't have that problem. They were very thin and a little runny, but not out of control. They applied smoothly and without pooling as long as I did thin coats. I did need to be mindful of brushstrokes, but the majority of them disappeared as the polish dried. These are pretty sheer and I needed to do three coats for opacity. They dry very quickly and look chrome-like even without topcoat.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with these. I wish the purple was a little darker and more chrome-like, and even though Swagga Like Us isn't an exact copy of Chanel Péridot, I don't know if I'd buy it again knowing just how similar they are. Actually, I'd buy Swagga Like Us over the Chanel if I had the choice, just because it's cheaper and the color is a little more saturated, plus the warmth makes it slightly easier to wear. Sugar Daddy is perfect, wouldn't change anything about it. If I had to choose just one polish from the collection to buy, it would be that one.

I ordered mine directly from Deborah Lippmann's website, but these are also available right now from Neiman Marcus.

  1. Ooooh, I'm in love with Sugar Daddy! How flattering is it on you! I didn't expect it to look so nice on the nail looking at the bottle. Very nice!

  2. I <3 Sugar Daddy and Swagga Like Us! I'm so glad the latter isn't a Peridot dupe; I like it much more than the Chanel! Thank you for the swatches! ^_^

  3. Pretty, layered colours. I like how the purple loooks on your short, square nails... I'm afraid my nail beds are nothing like so long and attractive, and i can't wear those colours anymore... but the gold, wow. I might be able to pull that off-- your pictures did some justice to the multiplicity of tone, as well. Nicely done, thanks for the review!

  5. Private Dancer is definitely the best out of the three! <3 Such a pretty purple multi-chrome!

  6. I didn't think I would like Sugar Daddy either, but it looks great on you. And it also makes me think of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which is a bonus... Ooh if Deborah came out with a polish called Midnight Radio, I would die!

  7. Oh my god are these out already?! Because I need all of them. Or at least 2...

  9. Loving Swagga Like Us (dumb name though). I was wondering what the difference is between a holo and chrome polish? These seems holo-esque to me, but what do I know?

    1. Haha I think the nae is dumb too XD These definitely aren't holo, though!

Holo (holographic) is a polish finish made up of tiny metallic/foil flecks that have a prismatic or rainbow effect. A rainbow of colors will appear on the nail. Here's an example of holo:

      http://www.scrangie.com/2012/01/england-legends-collection-swatches-and.html

A chrome nail polish is any nail polish with a smooth, nearly mirror-like metallic finish. Most often they're silver or gold. Here's an example of chrome:

And just for the sake of comparison, a "duochrome" or "multichrome" is not related to a chrome. It just means two/multiple colors in the same polish. A polish that either changes from one color to another or that flashes multiple colors as the angles change. Here's a duochrome:

  10. I'm with you--I thought I'd like Sugar Daddy the least but it is seriously gorgeous! They ALL are, actually. I have Peridot but I still want Swagga Like Us. Ugh, addiction...

  11. These polishes look great on you. I also like Sugar Daddy the best!

  12. If Sugar Daddy does turn out to be a Hedwig reference (which I'm really leaning towards it not being) I would have to reconsider not buying it.

  13. These are all really pretty! I just wish her polishes weren't so expensive. :(

  14. I bought these a few weeks ago and they are sitting in my collection to be swatches this weekend! They look gorgeous on you! I can't wait to compare OPI Just Spotted a Lizard to Swagga Like Us because when I just looked at my pics of the OPI, it's much more similar to Swagga LIke Us than to Peridot! Thanks for the gorgeous swatches!

  15. OMG...I want the first two! These are sooo pretty! Your swatches are amazing!

  16. I just wiki'd all the songs with titles as Sugar Daddy
    Music
"Sugar Daddy" (Jackson 5 song), a single by the Jackson 5 in 1971
"Sugar Daddy", a single by Nina Sky
"Sugar Daddy", a song by The Badloves
"Sugar Daddy" (1999 song), a song from the off-Broadway show and film Hedwig and the Angry Inch
"Sugar Daddy", a Christine McVie-penned Fleetwood Mac song from their 1975 album Fleetwood Mac
Sugar Daddy Live a live album by the Melvins

I'm seriously hoping she did it with Hedwig in mind :3

    1. The Thompson Twins also had a song called Sugar Daddy back in the 80s.
These are really lovely. The colors that show up in Sugar Daddy remind me of Orly Space Cadet.

  17. Sugar Daddy is the one that caught my eye and the one I will be getting now :) Ty, lol

  18. I'm a little bit gutted that Deborah Lippmann seems to be following trends rather than setting them these days :( I kind of feel like these aren't really duochrome enough to justify buying them... thanks for the swatches, you've saved me some ££! xx

  19. Oh man, I have to have Swagga Like Us. I think I've worn Peridot almost exclusively since August and a slightly warmer, more saturated version of it sounds incredible!! Also will definitely take a look at Sugar Daddy, it looks very pretty and I love these kind of glowy duochromes. :)

  20. "I'm your priiiiivate dancer... " rofl. Yes, Tina is badass. However, Sugar Daddy is my favorite of the three, Tom Jones reference aside. ;)

  21. Boogers, Scrangie! I had passed these up 'til I saw your pictures! Just like Peridot, now I HAVE to have them *sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  22. These are so pretty! I've never bought a DL polish because I couldn't justify the price, but I think I'd wear these enough to make it worth it... Dang it! Now I'm going to obsess over these until I break down and buy them :P

  23. Those remind me a lot of three Golden Rose polishes - 03, 10 and 17:

    1. WOW! They really look exactly alike! I've never seen the Golden Rose polishes before, but now it looks like these chromes are definite duplicates of those!

    2. It's very popular in Europe and cheap brand, 9ml bottle of polish costs about 3 dollars here. So price-wise I would always choose GR:)

    3. Thank you for telling me about it! I've heard the name a lot before but always thought I'd never be able to find the brand, so I never paid much attention to it! I just found their online shop and now I'm tempted to order everything XD

    4. Their collection Paris Magic is great - I bought four of them - 313, 309, 307 and 302. 307 is amazing:) The bottles don't look neat for me and the caps are annoying, but it's worth trying:) Especially for layering, f.e.:

    5. Swagga like us definitely seems like a dupe to GR 03, here's my comparison with Peridot - http://peek-a-polish.blogspot.com/2011/11/peridot-vs-golden-rose.html
I also have that purple GR, haven't tried it yet, but I'd say it's pretty close to PD :)

  24. hahaha!!! how I love Hedwig! and you are spot on... Tina Turner is bad ass! reading your blog is so detrimental to my wallet. I need all 3 in my life.

  25. I really love that swagge like us- so pretty! I think I like it better than the chanel one. private dancer is really nice too but I have a duo chrome polish like that from avon--- thanx so much for the swatches and the UD giveaway too

  26. I like the purple the best. When you said "chrome finish" and "mirror", I was hoping for something more mirror like. These kind of seem a bit too frost-like for my taste, especially the second two.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Just when I decided that I could live my life without buying another $18 polish!! I will have to check out the Golden Rose site though. Scooting...

  28. I was waiting to see your swatches before ordering Sugar Daddy, and even if it looks great on you, I know it's the kind of color that turns horrible with my skin tone... I was hoping it was more pink and less champagne...
    Thanks for the swatches!!!

  29. Whoa, these are gorgeous! Swagga Like Us is amazing. Thanks for comparing it to Chanel Peridot (a polish I love - it was and still is my first Chanel anything!). I may need to get Swagga Like Us. It's different enough, but still the kind of duochrome that I crave.

  30. I love Sugar Daddy. So much. I always get so excited by nude based duochromes, and they are kind of my favorite. I've never bought Deborah Lippman before, and I don't think that I could justify it, but gosh, you're pushing me, Scrangie! would you say that Sugar Daddy is anything like Nina Pro Molten Copper, but in awesome, intense chrome form? Also, I wonder what these colors would look like matte... It'd be weird.

    ReplyDelete
  31. These are nice but I'm not too hot for chromes. They always feel so bar star on my nails. But I love the Lippmann formula and I can imagine that if you love chromes that you would enjoy these.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Even though I think that metallic type of finish is my least favourite of all finishes (it reminds me way too much of my very first Sally Hansen 'chrome' finish polish in a sickening shade of pink, haha), Sugar Daddy looks amazing! And I kind of love Peridot, I keep ogling it, but I'm holding strong for the OPI dupe from the new Spiderman collection! Eve

  33. Ooooh, I like Swagga Like Us better than Peridot b/c I think it will look better on my warmer skin tone! May have to shell out for this one...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well that did it, I just ordered them all. ;) GORGEOUS.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sugar Daddy is amazing!!! It almost looks rose gold, no? I wonder if it looks like that in person!

    ReplyDelete
  36. i am completely in love with the purple one. generally, lippmann is a bit pricey for my wallet, but i might have to purchase it! the last one, swagga like us, have you compared it to ozotic 507? it looks almost the same to that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. OMG WANT Private Dancer!
    I like Swagga Like Us.

    ReplyDelete
  38. OOOOoooh private dancer - I wont be shelling out £16 pound for it though.. DL is so overpriced that it makes me sigh. but what a beaute! x

  39. They look like awesomesauce in the bottles :3

    ReplyDelete
  40. O-M-G!!! Pleeeeaaaassse tell me the multichrome-chrome trend is going to catch on!!! Two of my favorite things in polish <3

  41. I must have received a bottle from a bad batch. I ordered Private Dancer and Swagga Like Us from Neiman Marcus. My Private Dancer doesn't look anything like the swatches I've seen online from different bloggers. It looks like plain purple polish I could have picked up at the drug store for $1.99. It looks awesome in the bottle though. =/
