Refinery 29 Exclusive Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Monarch

Want to see my very first ever Lipstick Queen lipstick? I've always heard raves about Poppy King's lipstick line, but since I rarely wear lipstick, I never felt compelled to purchase one... until now. As soon as I saw pictures of this, I knew I had to have it. It's called Monarch, and it was a limited-edition shade exclusive to Refinery 29.

Monarch comes in a satiny purple metal tube with Lipstick Queen printed on it in purple lettering. This is an interesting tube; the color of it seems to shift from brownish to purpleish depending on the lighting.

And here's the lipstick. In natural light:

With flash:

And under fluorescent light:

As you can see, the lipstick is coated in a metallic turquoise duochrome sparkle. It shifts from turquoise to pure green, from blue to purple and then to red. It's a little bit like Sally Hansen Turquoise Opal in lipstick form.

Sadly, the turquoise sparkle is only on the outside. The lipstick underneath the sparkle is supposed to be a sheer red, and the coating of sparkles is intended to add a subtle green-blue shimmer to the red lipstick.

Honestly, guys... I'm not ready to swatch this yet. It's so pretty to look at and the minute I use it, it's going to be ruined. I think I'll use it eventually... just not yet. I want to look at it a little while longer. What? Don't tell me you've never bought makeup just to look at. I know you know all about the bittersweet joys of shimmer overspray, what with your golden sparkling seahorses and gilded metallic hearts and all.

But here's how it looks on the model from Refinery 29's website:

Isn't this an amazing looking piece of cosmetic art? I love things like this. I really hope they do more shades with this sparkly, multichromatic shimmer overspray, cause I'll go crazy for them. Or better yet, mix the shimmer in with the color too. Or just make one that's one solid stick of color-shifting turquoise sparkles. I'd buy that.

One thing about the name of this lipstick, though.

  8. Oh my goodness, that lipstick is lovely on the outside! I wouldn't want to ruin a pretty thing like that either. I would buy it if it was the same duochrome-y goodness on the inside.

  9. Gorgeous!!!

It totally looks like the lipstick version of my BELOVED Femme Couture Lip Luster Sahara Rose (available at Sally's). Even down to the turquoise blue glitter.

  10. Are we secret twins? That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the name!

And why is it just overspray, boooo!

(I would never use it if I got it. My pretty golden seahorse has never even been opened!)

  11. Love the Venture Bros! Can't wait to see you use this lipstick, though.

  12. That shade of red looks lovely. Glitter in lipstick can be a lot of fun when done right. Sad I missed out on getting one!

  13. I love lipstick queen and have a bunch of their gloss pencils. I love the Monarch too! so maybe I need to get this

  14. Boo, sad that I missed out! Oh well, like you, I know I'd never use it.

  15. I have a few Lipstick Queen lipstiks, glosses & lip pencils. Love them. I love lipstick as much as nail polish. Lipstick has always been my first love. I want this gorgeous tube. I have a few lipsticks like this. I believe they were by Avon. I bought them years ago. I hate that the overspray disappears. I'm dying to see it swatched though. I have tons of makeup I haven't used. It's insane but I can't help buying things for packaging.

  16. So pretty! I don't blame you for not wanting to use it yet. I have some things that I've set aside and plan to use, but just not yet

  21. This is very interesting looking. And I have to laugh, I literally just wore SH Turquoise Opal yesterday....for the first time in years!

  22. Well the lipstick itself looks utterly amazing, I died a little.

Also I love The Venture Brothers, I tell my boyfriend all the time that he's totally the Monarch, which I guess makes me Dr. Girlfriend, which I certainly have no problems with lol

  23. Huh... this is one of those shades that looks so ugly it's pretty! Weird that they'd only have the glitter on the outside though :(

  24. Holy mother of all lipsticks! What a beauty. I can't wait for you to eventually swatch it!

  25. Looks amazing in the bullet. I have 3 Lipstick Queens - having heard so much buzz about it. I liked the shades on me - but they did not last AT ALL. They are sheer and feel nice on the lip. I am not one that eats my lipstick off in 10 mins like many do. I can get most to last 5 hrs at least if I don't eat anything. Lipstick Queen is gone in 45 mins max every time I have used them. Sooo have never bought any more. She's got a good idea - love the sheer see thought - love some of her colors - love it IS sheer and a light coverage. But for the price, I have to get some lasting 'juice' out of the application. It lasts more like a cheap lipgloss. I would save this one to just look at it too for awhile. Too bad she did not find a way to make the teal dissolve into the bullet color and leave behind a teal iridescence. I have some fav light blue, leaning teal lipglosses that really make your teeth look tons whiter.

  26. Aww, I really wish it wasn't a overlay this lipstick would be truly unique. x

  27. Fainted, then felt so dissapointed it's just an overspray :/ Man oh man..make this a lip color pronto.

  28. I'd like to put my name down on the list for the stick of color shifting sparkles.

  29. Gosh that is an eye candy! I don't use lipstick and don't own any but man, I'd get this just to look at it :D

  30. Ugh!! I didn't even know this existed and now I don't know how I will live without it. Its not available anymore!!!! I am going to cry myself into a stupor today.

  32. SWOON!! I've always wished for a blue/brown pigment kinda lipstick...but it's sold out...I wouldn't want to swatch it either, glad I'm not alone in that way. I like to hold things for a lil while before I use them. Too bad it's not gilttery throughout.

  33. I gasped when I saw the pictures. It is SO dissapointing that the shimmer doesn't go all the way through! Maybe it would just be better for eye candy than to be used. It's so so pretty. I think I'll paint my nails with Galaxy Girl to ease my winey-purple with green-blue sparkles need this has caused.

  34. I am sorry I missed this, but I do remember a MAC lipstick that had some of that type of green in it called Spanish Fly. Anyone have it? It was a dark lipstick and it had a turquoise tint that went through it, not just the outside. I still want this one tho.

  37. Sorry about the duplicate posts, I tried to delete following the directions. The Lipstick Queen released 5 shades in the Butterfly Ball collection back in 2009, with the turquoise shimmer. Space NK in the UK had them: These 5 beautiful and subtle shades lie down as sheer as a butterfly wing & shimmer with a hint of turquoise when the light hits them. This blue flash is very flattering and helps your teeth appear whiter.

    1. No worries, it happens! I just looked at the ones QVC has.. can't tell from their website, but it sorta seems like those are the ones with the turquoise shimmer in them... I may need to pick those up!

  38. Oh my! I wish the whole tube is like that and not just the outer layer!

  40. All of the lipstick queen butterfly ball lipsticks have that turquoise shimmer running through them. I just bought a three-pack from QVC, but the shade with the most obvious shimmer is "goodbye" - it's like a more pigmented version of MAC's "high top" from the Fafi collection.

    1. I checked those out- hard to tell what they look like on QVC's website, but I'm tempted to order them!

  42. Due to your Venture Bros reference, this is now my favorite of all favorite blogs. Aaaaagh! Reading your posts makes me so happy! And I wouldn't use the lipstick either. But I would definitely nick the bullet on the cap. Sigh. This is why you're the blogger.

  46. OMG I read Refinery 29 almost every day, how did I miss this??? I would've bought two - one to wear and one to just keep unused and gorgeous, because this is amazing!

I second the request - anyone know of a dupe? I usually do a matte bright red, but this sheer, dewy red I'm really digging!
