New Stila Sparkle Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner for Summer 2011

Speaking of new Stila eyeliners, have you seen these? I'm a little late in posting them as they've been out for a couple months now, but it's still summer and this is a summer collection so they're still technically new!

Stila claims that these are the first ever waterproof liquid glitter liners. I wouldn't really call them glittery... But they're definitely waterproof liquid metallic/foil eyeliners!

The Stila Sparkle Waterproof Liquid eyeliner formula comes in eight shades (top to bottom): Royal, Curacao, Bora Bora, Electric, Flash, Rock Candy, Starry and Sequins.

They come in a very skinny tube with a felt sponge tip tapered applicator. It's not as pointy as the Stay All Day Waterproof applicator. That one is more like a marker, this is more of a sponge. It's soft and flexible.

Swatched over bare skin. With flash and without. Left to right: Royal, Curacao, Bora Bora, Electric, Flash, Rock Candy, Starry and Sequins.

Royal is a pale violet with blue and pink duochrome and red and blue shimmer particles. It dries less vibrant than it looks wet, but retains the duochrome effect, albeit much more subtle than before.

Curacao is a bright cobalt blue. It reminds me of Urban Decay Radium, but Curacao has duochrome shimmer and a touch of purple flash to it.

Bora Bora is bright turquoise/aqua metallic. Leans more blue than green.

Electric is a green/blue duochrome that makes me think of Zoya Charla, but in eyeliner form. Leans more green than blue.

Flash is a dirty golden olive metallic. Looks like an antique gold in some lights but more of an olive green in others.

Rock Candy is a neutral chocolate brown metallic. Not red toned, but can lean more bronze than pure brown in some lights.

Starry is a gunmetal grey with purple undertones. A lot of the shimmer in this seems purple or pink.

Sequins is a black base with silver flaky metallic shimmer. The silver shimmer lightens the color as a whole, making it appear grey.

Here I am wearing two of the shades:

This is Flash. See how it flickers between olive green and antique gold? The eyeshadow I'm wearing is the LORAC Tantaleyes palette.

This is Sequins. Looks more grey than black, right? And not glittery, but sort of foily instead. The eyeshadow I'm wearing is MAC Hocus Pocus in crease, Jealousy Wakes underneath and I don't remember what shade is on the lid. Something from the Stila NaturalEyes palette, I think.

What I liked:
  • Great color selection.
  • Nice foily metallic shine.
  • Fairly easy application.
  • The outside of the tube matches the color of the liner! I love that!
  • Dries quickly.
  • Lasts until you take it off, no running or smudging.

What I didn't like:
  • The colors can be too sheer and need to be layered a few times for opacity.
  • They're not true glitter, which I was hoping for. They're foily metallic instead.
  • They're too thin and they bleed/feather on your eyelid.
  • Due to the bleeding/feathering, it's hard to get a nice crisp, clean line, especially if you wear it winged like I do. The line ends up looking blunt and blurry.
  • They're expensive for the amount of product you get- $22 for 0.05 fluid ounces.
  • The green and blue shades stain your eyelids.
  • They look really sparkly wet, but once they dry they're not as jaw-droppingly shimmery and iridescent looking as they were wet.

If these were a little more pigmented, thicker and less prone to bleeding, they'd be perfect. Maybe once I've been using them for a while and they start to dry out a bit, they'll go on thicker and bleed less.

These are really great for summer, though. A swipe of one of these sparkly, bright colors and a few coats of waterproof mascara is perfect low-maintenance waterproof summer makeup, ideal for the pool or beach, or just sitting around in hot, humid weather. They look really nice and shiny in the bright summer sunlight, so that's a bonus.

These are available now at Sephora and StilaCosmetics.com and I do not believe that any of the shades are limited edition.

(Some of these were sent to me for review.)

  1. Awesome colors, I like Electric and Starry most... If only I didn't suck at applying liquid eyeliner, haha.

  4. How do these compare to the mac superslick liners? They look very similar in packaging and consistency.

  5. I returned both Curaco and Flash. They stained my eyelids even with a cream based eye makeup remover.

  6. Diane, good question, I'm not sure! I don't have any of the MAC ones and I'm actually not familiar with the color range, I'll have to go check them out!

HauteBeautyBargain, yep, they stain me pretty badly too but at least it goes away quickly =x
